Duties

The incumbent will be responsible to acquire and provide knowledge, concepts and methodologies in physical oceanography, on behalf of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans objectives for ensuring the conservation of fisheries and aquatic resources, as well as providing safe and secure waterways. The incumbent will design and carry out independent, collaborative, and original scientific research. The incumbents will also be responsible to provide scientific knowledge, data, information, analysis, advice and recommendations to scientists and managers within the Department and to other external organizations including the general public. The positions will be located in Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Specific aspects of the duties include:

• Contribute to the development of regional ocean models based on a state-of-the-art community ocean modelling platform;
• Contribute to studies of air-sea interactions, ocean waves, atmosphere-ocean coupled dynamics, using state-of-the-art community model formulations;
• Contribute to the development of new methodologies to analyze satellite remote sensing observations;
• Carry out research analysis on ocean modelling and observational data;
• Lead or collaborate with scientists participating in related research and development projects;
• Provide external collaborators with technical support and advice; and
• Write peer-reviewed scientific articles and prepare scientific documents for publication in the form of in-house technical notes and presentations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION
► Graduation with an acceptable Doctoral Degree from a recognized university with a specialization in physical oceanography or in a related discipline with pertinent experience in physical oceanography modelling

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
► Experience in conducting independent and original research* in the observational, modelling and analysis in physical oceanography
► Experience in presenting research findings at scientific workshops or meetings
► Experience in authoring scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals with at least two papers in the last 5 years including at least one as the lead author

* Graduate school research for M.Sc. or Ph.D. thesis is not considered sufficient to meet this criteria

► Experience in research and development using ocean surface wave models such as, but not limited to, Wave Watch III, SWAN, or related atmospheric models like WRF
► Experience in research and development on coupled modelling for ocean circulation, surface waves, atmosphere or sea-ice
► Experience in research and development on microwave satellite remote sensing
► Experience in research of the Northwest Atlantic
► Experience in developing or leading collaborative research
► Experience in writing proposals to fund research
