Duties

CanmetENERGY is interested in heavy industry decarbonisation, particularly about the relative merit of bioenergy, electrification, cogeneration and carbon capture and sequestration as means to provide decarbonized heat to industry, while considering that biomass is a limited resource with several competing transformation pathways.

The candidate will be responsible to make this comparison with the help of a computable general equilibrium macroeconomic model using the TIMES platform. The candidate will make sensitivity analyses to determine which among the model input parameters, including those suggested by CanmetENERGY, are most susceptible to make one decarbonisation pathway more economical than another. The candidate will examine the model to see which biomass transformation pathways, or industrial heat generation pathways, may be missing or mischaracterized.

The candidate may also develop a methodology, using Life Cycle Assessment and the TIMES platform, to demonstrate which bioenergy technologies are most promising, especially in the industrial sector.

The candidate will work (telework) closely with CanmetENERGY all along the project, but will use the modeling platform entirely autonomously. The candidate will produce reports and presentations as part of this work.
