Provides leadership and management of the human and financial resources of the relevant Unit, including supervising as many as 10 or more staff.
Establishes, maintains and participates in partnerships, committees and working groups with federal and provincial government departments, Indigenous organizations and/or non-government organizations on initiatives related to wildlife and habitat conservation.
Provides national or regional leadership for the review and update of procedures and policies to align with and advance priorities of the Government of Canada in the context of wildlife and habitat conservation.
May be responsible for implementation of the Species at Risk Act, the Migratory Birds Convention Act, Impact Assessment Act or the Canada Wildlife Act.
May involve managing programs dealing with capital assets and real properties.
May involve managing programs dealing with grant and contribution programs for a region.
This process has been designed to have two (2) different job streams in one advertisement. The two streams are:
Stream 1: Unit Head – PC-04
Stream 2: Unit Head – BI-04
A pool of qualified candidates will be created to staff positions with various tenures (indeterminate, specified period, deployment, assignment, secondment, acting, acting extensions), language requirements (English Essential, Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB, Bilingual Imperative CBC/CBC) within the Canadian Wildlife Service Branch of Environment and Climate Change Canada.

STREAM 1: PC-04
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position such as biology, ecology, natural resource management or environmental science.
Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
STREAM 2: BI-04
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university in biological sciences with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position such as ecology, natural resource management or environmental science.
Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
STREAM 1 & 2:
EX1: Experience of at least one year managing, supervising or leading staff or a work team.
EX2: Experience of at least one year with managing financial resources.
EX3: Experience of at least one year developing or implementing policies or programs related to wildlife, natural resource management or biodiversity.
EX4: Recent* experience of at least three years in working in partnerships with various groups in the field of conservation, environment, biodiversity or natural resource management, such as provincial government, non governmental organizations, industry or Indigenous communities.
EX5: Recent* experience of at least three years in providing advice, guidance or strategic recommendations on complex issues in the fields of conservation, environment, biodiversity or natural resource management.
* Recent experience designates experience acquired in the last 5 years.

A cut-off score (in other words, establishing a higher threshold than the pass mark and selecting only the candidates who meet this threshold) and a top-down approach (in other words, establishing a maximum number of candidates who can proceed to the next assessment stage) may be used at any step if there is a sufficient number of candidates to meet immediate and anticipated staffing needs.
Depending on the requirements of the position(s) being staffed from this process, for current or future vacancies, any or all of the asset qualifications, operational requirements, and organizational needs may be applied at the time of staffing.
