Duties

Stream 1: Cryosphere Physical Scientist
Design, plan and conduct field, laboratory and office research activities, in support of permafrost science research.

Stream 2: Physical Scientist Geoinformatics (permafrost)
Conduct geospatial and statistical analysis of large datasets in support of permafrost research, mapping, and modelling.

Stream 3: Physical Scientist Geoinformatics (surficial geology)
Conduct geospatial and statistical analysis of large geology datasets in support of remote surficial materials and landform mapping, and mineral prospectivity modelling.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff three (3) position for a period of four (4) years.

Additionally, a pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the PC-02 group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in geology, geography, geophysics, environmental science, or other science relevant to the position.

NOTE: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization. Demonstration of experience equivalent to post-secondary degree program is also acceptable.

Degree equivalency

All Streams
Experience in the interpretation and integration of field-related geoscientific data and data from other sources
Experience in planning research project activities, including planning equipment, financial and human resource requirements.
Experience presenting research results in narrative and graphic form
Experience in providing scientific or technical advice
Experience in collaborating with internal/external partners.
Experience documenting methodological and analytical procedures for scientific reports or publications

Stream 1: Cryosphere Physical Scientist
Experience in designing, planning and conducting field campaigns including use, installation and operation of field instrumentation and the acquisition of field data and digital data

Stream 2: Physical Scientist Geoinformatics (permafrost) and
Stream 3: Physical Scientist Geoinformatics (surficial geology)
Experience using at least one geographic information system (GIS) software package (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, or PCI Geomatica)
Experience in computer modelling or simulation

Knowledge of one or more scripting languages for scientific modelling (e.g. Python, R, Matlab or SQL)

Stream 3: Physical Scientist Geoinformatics (surficial geology)
Experience in data visualization and machine-learning techniques using multi-source geological data
Experience with image analysis, including identification of landscape features
Experience working with geochemical data

Stream 1: Cryosphere Physical Scientist
Knowledge of collection, organization and analysis of data related to permafrost
Knowledge of geophysical methods (ERT, GPR, CCR) applied to permafrost environments
Knowledge of geospatial survey methods using drones or GPS & DGPS positioning
Knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) such as ESRI ArcGIS and related software such as Python for geospatical data manipulation and analysis.

Stream 2: Physical Scientist Geoinformatics (permafrost)
Knowledge of collection, organization and analysis of data related to permafrost
Knowledge of machine-learning methodologies applied to geoscientific data
Knowledge of hydrological/hydrogeological model simulation and numerical analysis in permafrost environments

Stream 3: Physical Scientist Geoinformatics (surficial geology)
Knowledge of the Geological Survey of Canada surficial data model

All Streams:
Willing and able to work overtime as required and to adopt flexible work hours as per operational requirements

Stream 1: Cryosphere Physical Scientist
• Willingness and ability to travel and conduct strenuous field work in arctic and sub-arctic regions
• Valid driver’s license
