The intent of this process is to staff 1 Indeterminate position with an English Essential profile. A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at these groups and levels with various conditions of employment, various language requirements (english essential, BBB/BBB and CBC/CBC) as well as various security and tenures across Health Canada and on behalf of other federal government organizations. Education:
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural sciences related to the duties of the position (such as microbiology, molecular biology, biology, biochemistry, food science).
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES). Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
• Operational research and scientific analysis;
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
Experience:
EEx1. Experience in planning and conducting original research in the field of bacteriology.
EEx2. Experience in preparing and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and in presenting papers at scientific meetings.

Knowledge:
EK1. Knowledge of bacteria associated with foodborne outbreaks and the foods involved in outbreaks with these pathogens.
EK2. Knowledge of the growth, ecology and destruction of foodborne bacterial pathogens of humans.
EK3. Knowledge of traditional and molecular techniques related to bacteriology.
Abilities:
A1. Ability to design and conduct research studies in the areas of enteric bacterial pathogens, applied food bacteriology, microbial ecology or bacterial foodborne pathogens.
A2. Ability to analyze and evaluate research data.
A3. Ability to communicate effectively orally.
A4. Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
A5. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
A6. Ability to train laboratory personnel and lead.

Asset Experience:
AEx1 Significant* experience in publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers on foodborne bacterial pathogens or applied food microbiology.
AEx2. Six (6) months or more of post-doctoral work experience.
AEx3 Experience working with Vibrio spp.
AEx4 Experience with detection, identification, characterization, growth, ecology or destruction/inactivation of foodborne bacterial pathogens.
AEx5 Experience working with molecular techniques such as real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction), nucleic acid sequencing, generation of deletion mutants, or in areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics or peptidomics of bacteria.
AEx6 Experience studying antibiotic resistance in foodborne bacterial pathogens.
*For the purpose of this process the word significant means authorship or co-authorship of at least 10 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
Operational Needs :
Willingness and ability to travel in Canada and internationally.
