The student will design, conduct and publish research studies on factors affecting the biology (e.g., resting spore survival) and management of clubroot disease on canola and Brassica vegetables. To carry out these studies, the student must have a detailed knowledge of the biology of the pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassica), understanding of the principles of plant pathology to design and conduct the experiments, knowledge of statistics to analyse the data, and a broad knowledge of plant agriculture to interpret the results and make recommendations to producers based on the results of the study.
Most of the project will be conducted in the laboratories, growth rooms and field station facilities at the University of Guelph under the direct supervision of a professor in the Department of Plant Agriculture, with co-supervision of a senior research scientist at the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The project will consist of two or more focussed lines of research on clubroot, most of which will be conducted solely by the student. However, the goal of this work is to improve understanding and management of the pathogen for producers around the world, which can only be accomplished by publishing the results in scientific journals. Therefore, the results of these studies may be combined with information from other students and colleagues for final publication
