Duties

We are seeking a research scientist with expertise and experience to develop and lead a research program in the field of Energy and Irrigation System Science.

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists at the Lethbridge RDC working on decreasing the energy intensity of Canadian farming systems with irrigation, using increases in water and nutrient efficiencies, as well as energy and input alternatives. The position requires scientific innovation and leadership in developing novel farm systems with an overall lower carbon input while maintaining productivity and competitiveness.

The incumbent will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and will have the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders in academia and industry. Research Scientists have access to competitive core and external funding opportunities, and are supported by technical and administrative staff. Research Scientists are encouraged to seek university affiliation and co-supervise graduate students.

The researcher is expected to manage multiple projects in a multidisciplinary setting requiring collaboration with other scientific teams. They will be expected to seek internal and external funding and collaborators to support the research program and to effectively manage resources to achieve the desired outcomes. The scientist will directly supervise staff, and may mentor and train post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.

Work environment

This position, located at Lethbridge, Alberta, is part of competitively-funded research programs in livestock, crop and soil research. The position is part of a research network with access to research facilities and scientific expertise across Canada, and is supported by technical staff.

Established in 1906, the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre is one of the largest facilities within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's research network. It includes the main research Centre, located on the outskirts of the city, and the Vauxhall Research Farm, about 80 kilometres northwest of Lethbridge. Agriculture in the area consists of both rain fed and irrigated production.

The Centre conducts research in six sector strategies:
• Agro-ecosystem Resilience
• Cereal and Pulse
• Dairy, Pork, Poultry and Other Livestock
• Forages and Beef
• Horticulture
• Oilseeds

Intent of the process

EDUCATION

 Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of science with a specialization related to the duties of the position, such as, but not limited to:

agroecology; agronomy; environmental science; energy and irrigation system science; agricultural engineering or life cycle analysis.

Applications will be accepted from candidates enrolled in their final year, but who have not yet completed a Ph.D. program. Completion of the Ph.D. thesis must occur before the date of appointment.

Degree equivalency

► Recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, peer-reviewed scientific journals, or other communications resulting from:
a) Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems; OR
b) Operational research and scientific analysis; OR
c) Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development; OR
d) Developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment.

Experience analysing the environmental sustainability of irrigated cropping systems
Experience in evaluating and implementing novel farming practices, including renewable or alternative energy sources.
Experience in data collection and analysis.
