Duties

GL-MAN-05 duties vary day-to-day based on operational needs. As our Area Supervisor, Victor Eaton, puts it:

“A typical day is not so typical. There are many aspects of work and many ways to grow and learn from all of the Trades that are established on the Hay River Coast Guard base. As a small base, everyone pitches in to be productive and achieve all of the tasks at hand. The Hay River base has a fully functional Carpenter’s Shop, Mechanic’s Bay and Welding Shop.”

Some general duties include: shoveling snow, lawn maintenance, building and painting day beacons, buoy cleaning and maintenance, prepping steel forms, mixing and pouring cement, assisting the welder and carpenter with tasks, travelling to and from other bases, and pressure washing and detailing vehicles as required.

Work environment

Opportunity awaits with the Canadian Coast Guard’s newly formed Arctic Region. Join Marine and Civil Infrastructure’s growing team of talented professionals in Hay River, NT.

In October 2018, the minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard announced the creation of stand-alone Arctic Regions to be built in partnership with Inuit, First Nations and Métis, and Northern partners. The new Arctic Regions will better align programs and services with Inuit, First Nations, Métis, and Northern priorities, and advance reconciliation.

Life in Hay River, NT

As many CCG Hay River employees will point out, the best thing about living and working in Hay River is the natural beauty. Nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers will love it here. Fishing, hunting, and camping are among the many outdoor activities that locals enjoy. As Victor states, “If you enjoy the outdoors, this is the place to be. There really are no downsides to living in the north as long as you enjoy winter and all the outdoor adventures that go along with it.”

When asked what inspired him to move to Hay River in the first place, Victor responds,
“Hay River is a growing community, and I wanted to be part of that development. There are plenty of opportunities in this small town, and if you are looking to grow with the community, the sky is the limit.”

A word of advice for those considering making the move north: Be prepared, be flexible, and be open to learning. Tasks and priorities may shift depending on the weather, hours of daylight, and availability of resources.
