Duties

Participate in fishery monitoring programs for Recreational, Commercial and First Nations fisheries.
Participate in juvenile and adult salmon enumeration programs. Work with Senior Technician and Area Biologist to collect field data and biological samples. Includes assisting with stream surveys, catch sampling, data entry, compilation and review.
Undertake maintenance and repair of vessels and assessment equipment.
Work with external stakeholders and partners to deliver project.
Abide by all DFO Occupational Health and Safety policies and safe work procedures.
Assess stream conditions, collect environmental data consistent with establish protocols and ensure stream access and survey markers are in place.
Take all reasonable and necessary precautions to ensure safety and health of oneself and others within the work environment.
Abide by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Values and Ethics code.

Intent of the process

The primary use of this process will be to staff various Fisheries Technician positions on a seasonal, term less than 6 month, or casual basis within the South Coast Area Stock Assessment program. This process may also be used to staff other similar programs within the South Coast or the Pacific Region.

ALL POSITIONS

Secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives; a satisfactory score on the PSC test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience

Degree equivalency

Experience working in a safe manner in all work related undertakings.
Experience working with others and/or the public, particularly to deliver a common goal.

EG-02

Experience operating and/or maintaining field equipment such as boats, motors, vehicles, inflatable rafts, seine nets and biological sampling and mechanical equipment.
Experience working with Pacific Salmon or other species important to First Nations, Recreational or Commercial Fisheries.
Experience with data entry using applicable computer software programs such as MS Excel, Word.
Experience in data management including organization and labelling of samples and data sheets.

Valid First Aid Certification (Minimum Level 1 with CPR).

Experience with data entry using applicable computer software programs such as MS Excel, Word.
Experience in data management including organization and labelling of samples and data sheets.
Experience with field equipment such as boats, and/or, motors, vehicles, inflatable rafts, seine nets and biological sampling and mechanical equipment.
Experience conducting stock assessments of anadromous salmonids.

Ability to work effectively independently.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

EG-02

Enrollment in, or successful completion of, a post-secondary program or employer-approved alternative; a satisfactory score on the PSC test approved as an alternative; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience with maintenance, repair, or refurbishment of field equipment while in use in the field.
Experience with general construction – building/fabricating structures.
Experience related to installation and operation of field equipment in remote locations.
Experience and Proficiency in the operation and basic maintenance of power driven (jet and/or propeller) vessels.

Swift Water Rescue Training.
SVOP, MEDA3 and ROCM Certification.
Jet Boat Operator Training.
Air Egress Training.
Bear Awareness Training.

Working overtime, weekends, variable hours and shift work as required to meet operational needs.
Ability to work in remote locations.
Working and living in remote field camps, often under challenging conditions such as inclement weather, with limited amenities for extended periods of time.
Working in and around lakes and swiftwater environments.
Participation in periods of strenuous physical work, associated with field activities and equipment maintenance.
Flying in helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft.
Willingness to reside in proximity to various project locations within the South Coast Area.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

A valid BC Class 5 or 7 Driver's License (or equivalent).
Health Canada Medical Clearance (Term or Indeterminate Positions).
Seasonally working overtime, weekends, shift work and variable hours for continuous durations up to 10 weeks, as required to meet operational needs.
Working and living in remote field camps, often under challenging conditions such as inclement weather, with limited amenities for extended periods of time.
Working in and around lakes and swift water environments.
Participation in periods of strenuous physical work, associated with field activities and equipment maintenance.
Flying in helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft.
Attain and maintain certifications as may be required to meet Departmental health and safety standards.
