We are working to improve existing technologies and methods, while pioneering novel ones, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and making clean energy technologies economically competitive with traditional approaches.

The Metallurgical Fuels Laboratory within CanmetENERGY Ottawa has a close working relationship with iron and steel makers and with metallurgical coal producers, mostly through the Canadian Carbonization Research Association, which has been active for over 50 years. Recent developments include replacement of coke with renewable forms of fuel and reductants such biocarbon produced from forestry residues and construction and demolition wastes. The laboratory generates data needed by industry to evaluate and model inputs into iron and steel manufacture by using pilot scale furnaces and large-scale equipment combined with bench scale testing of critical properties.
