The Director, Coast Guard Safety Management is a new and exciting role within the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG).
The Director reports directly to the Deputy Commissioner, Operations on a day to day basis, and reports immediately to the Commissioner of the CCG on issues arising from the employment of the safety management system (SMS), which have an impact on a person's health and safety, vessel safety and security, or potential pollution not immediately correctable within the normal reporting structure. The Director has a functional relationship with the Regional Managers, Coast Guard Safety Management, and provides general guidance and direction regarding the CCG SMS. The Director is responsible for ensuring overall conformity with the SMS as defined within the Safety manuals.

EDUCATION:
-Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
OR
-Acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in providing strategic advice and briefings to senior management on policy, program, and/or regulatory issues relating to safety or security in an operational environment.
- Experience in maintaining strategic partnerships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Experience in collaborating with other levels of government, industry or interest groups.
- Experience in managing human and financial resources in a national or international organization.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of Federal Government priorities related to the Canadian Coast Guard.
- Knowledge of marine safety and security.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Nationally-recognized certification in occupational health and safety, for example, as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional.
- Experience in developing and implementing a corporate management framework (which could include, but would not be limited to elaborating policies, procedures, programs, systems, directive and training) in a marine context.
- Experience in developing memoranda of understanding, memoranda to Cabinet, and/or Treasury Board submissions.
- Experience managing national operations in a marine context.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The incumbent of this position will be required to travel inside Canada and may be required to travel outside Canada.
- The incumbent of this position will be required to work overtime on short notice.
