What would you do as a Data Services Specialist?
• Plans and conducts the analysis of statistical program data; writes and edits analytical material for internal use and publication purposes.
• Conducts analysis of socio-economic trends and developments to assess the feasibility and impact of new or modified statistical programs.
• Provides feedback on collection, processing, editing, compilation and presentation methods and procedures following data analysis and makes recommendations for improvements to established survey methods and activities.
• Provides advisory and consultative services as well as subject matter advice to data users within and outside StatCan.
• Represents subject-matter divisions on development projects, task forces or committees in various roles such as Project Manager, Task manager and Task Force Leader.
• Leads project teams involved in the conduct of subject matter studies/reviews
Our immediate need is to staff in the Western Region (Edmonton, Winnipeg or Vancouver), candidates interested in working in either of these locations may be assessed first.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff similar positions of various tenures, with various linguistic profiles in various locations based on operational needs.

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of two years of a post-secondary program with acceptable specialization in social science*, statistics, library/archival work* or a law-related field.
* "Social science" includes: economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, demography/population studies, history, psychology, geography, criminology, and other disciplines associated with social science such as (not limited to) finance, accounting, commerce, business administration, agriculture, environment sciences, data science/data analytics, education, epidemiology or health. "Library/archival work" includes gallery and museum type functions.
EXPERIENCE:
EXP1 : Recent* and significant** experience using SAS software manipulating data to achieve and deliver on results
EXP2 : Experience using advanced functionalities in Microsoft Excel for data processing
EXP3 : Minimum one year experience extracting data from large databases or datasets
*Recent experience is usually defined as experience acquired in the last three (3) years.
**Significant experience is usually defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally acquired through the full-time performance of the activities related to a position for a period of at least twelve (12) months

EDUCATION:
Bachelor degree or higher with specialization in demography, economics, sociology, criminology, business administration, statistics or data science.

- Experience managing a project or leading a business process
- Programming experience in Power BI, R, Python or VBA macros
- Experience creating custom maps using ArcGIS
- Experience in preparing and delivering training
- Experience in extracting Census data
- Experience using programming language to develop Windows applications (e.g., C++, Visual basics etc.)
