Duties

Provides investigational forensic identification support services to law enforcement investigators including detecting, examining, recording, collecting and preserving physical, biological, and/or other trace evidence on exhibits at detachments, at approved locations, and/or in a laboratory setting.

Write reports and/or oral briefings relating to chain of custody of exhibits for operational police personnel and other law enforcement agencies for use in investigations, and/or the courts for criminal proceedings.

Provides technical support to various Integrated Forensic Identification Services Units including: the submission of digital latent fingerprints using the Central Latent Client System (CLC); requesting digital 1 o print collections from Ottawa; requesting and compiling photograph collections for presentation in court.

Identifies supply requirements, orders supplies from vendors, maintains and cleans laboratory instrumentation and equipment.

Conducts experiments and reviews new methodologies and protocols within the field of Forensic Identification Services, including conducting field trials of chemicals for use in the forensic processing of scenes or exhibits.

Provides guidance and advice to operational police personnel and other law enforcement agencies in the detection, seizing and preservation of criminal forensic evidence.

Working conditions:

The duties of the position may require exposure to graphic images including gruesome crime scenes and/or evidence which could have a negative psychological impact. There is potential for extended exposure to the results of extreme violence with an inability to switch activities or avoid the environment. The nature and duration of the exposure is unpredictable.

The work requires physical effort including climbing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and/or lifting which could result in physical injury. Likelihood of injury from the physical exertion requirements of the position is rare.

The work may be performed indoors in a lab setting or in other approved locations which could include fire scenes, drug grow operations, unsanitary homes. Exposure to such settings may cause temporary discomfort. The work may also be performed outside with exposure to all weather conditions including inclement weather such as extreme cold or heat, wind, rain, and/or lightening which may result in discomfort.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff three positions (one per site: Calgary, Grand Prairie, and St-Paul) on an indeterminate basis, with a linguistic profile of English Essential and an RCMP Secret security clearance

A pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions within the RCMP on an indeterminate or specified period (including term, acting, or assignment) basis, with English essential linguistic profiles and various RCMP security clearances.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM.

Within first 12 months of appointment:
This position is comprised of a training program. As part of the conditions of employment, the appointed candidate must successfully complete the training program including the successful completion of the mock trial within the first 12 months of their appointment. Failure to meet this condition of employment will result in termination of employment or rejection on probation.
