Work environment

The Vessels of Concern program is responsible for addressing all types of vessels representing a hazard - be it environmental, health and safety-based, or socio-economic - within Canada’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. In this context, Coast Guard officers will investigate, assess, hold owners accountable to their legal responsibilities, and direct or take immediate action as required to ensure the environment is protected.

Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to staff one English position in Dartmouth, NS, and one English position in St. John's, NL, for a period of up to one year with the possibility of extension. A pool of qualified candidates will be established which may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures and linguistic requirements within the Canadian Coast Guard.

EDUCATION

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
- Experience with either planning, operating, or responding functions in the context of marine operations or incident management.
- Experience providing operational reports, briefings or presentations.
- Experience preparing reports or technical documents using computer software such as, but not, limited to Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

- Knowledge of the Vessels of Concern national strategy, the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act and the role of Coast Guard, Transport Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Small Craft Harbours

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
- Post-secondary diploma or degree related to the duties of the position (such as but not limited to: environmental science, marine biology, engineering, naval architect)
- Marine Certification in Navigation or Engineering

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
- Small Vessel Operator’s Certificate
- Radio Operator’s Certificate (Maritime) or higher

EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in the delivery of a Canadian Coast Guard program
- Experience in marine operations
- Experience in small craft operations
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience engaging stakeholders, such as other government departments, private organizations, industry, indigenous communities, or the general public
- Experience in conducting regulatory oversight activities such as inspections, compliance activities, audits, or enforcement activities
- Experience conducting marine surveys or assessments
- Experience in using mapping software

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

A valid driver’s license
A valid medical certificate to the Health Canada Category 2-XVI standard
Willing and able to work overtime, including occasional evenings and weekends
Willing and able to travel upon short notice on various means of transport including ships, small vessels and aircraft to remote locations
Willing and able to wear and maintain a uniform as per CCG’s standards, inclusive of CSA approved Safety Footwear, and maintain job related personal protective equipment
