The intent of this process is to hire one indeterminate position immediately in Nanaimo, BC. A pool will be created in anticipation of future vacancies. The pool may be used to staff positions with similar qualifications within the department in various locations and/or tenures throughout the Pacific Region.

EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in managing financial, human and material resources.
• Experience in building and managing teams that can implement aquatic science projects or programs.
• Experience collaborating with internal teams or external stakeholders, partners or clients*.
* stakeholders, partners or clients may include (but not limited to): Indigenous partners, federal, provincial and municipal departments and agencies, private sector organizations, scientific and technical experts, industry representatives, ENGOs or the public.
• Experience leading complex** projects or initiatives that contribute to scientific understanding and management advice for aquatic habitat or aquatic species.
**Complex is defined as two or more of the following characteristics: high profile (i.e. attracting public or media attention); involving multiple stakeholders; multi-jurisdictional/multi-disciplinary in nature; involving third-party interests; requiring multiple consultations; or having a significant impact.
• Experience analyzing information from a variety of sources and providing information and advice on issues related to the management or conservation of aquatic resources.
• Experience in writing technical reports, briefings or other similar documents or publications, and carrying out briefings for senior management on program planning and implementation, issue management, and/or client services.
• Experience in communicating organizational priorities to supervisors to guide the assignment and supervision of scientific staff.
EDUCATION:
• Post-graduate degree from a recognized university in a natural, physical or applied science with a specialization in a field relevant to the position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in building and managing teams to implement complex science projects or programs in aquatic science and technology, particularly relating to one or more of the following: (i) applied aquatic technology, (ii) aquarium or animal husbandry services, (iii) lab analysis (iv) marine acoustic or visual survey tools (v) fisheries stock assessment and/or monitoring programs.
• Experience with policies and guidelines related to animal care in a research setting, and their application to fish and invertebrate research and husbandry.
• Experience working with, storing, and managing data of high complexity and volume; such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), acoustic or visual data, or other.
• Experience in managing large and diverse teams including representatives from various organizations.
• Experience in collaborating with other science professionals, partners and/or stakeholder groups to develop innovative solutions in complex scientific topics such as fish stock assessment or marine conservation.
• Experience in exercising authority under section 34 of the Financial Administration Act.
• Experience in evaluating the effects of human activity on the marine environment.
• Experience in managing an animal or plant diagnostic laboratory or program.
• Experience working with a quality management program.
• Experience in the application of stock assessment concepts and policies relevant to DFO’s sustainable fisheries framework and the precautionary approach.
• Experience in the application or implementation of policies and/or guidelines relating to occupational safety and health in the workplace.
• Experience in developing and implementing program management frameworks / processes in order to deliver required outputs such as strategic advice for decision makers.
• Experience in presenting science programs and advice to a wide range of audiences including First Nations, Industry representatives, other clients, or the public.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Mobility associated with possession of a valid BC Drivers licence.
• Willingness and ability to travel within Canada as well as internationally.
• Flexibility in hours of work.
• Willingness and ability to undertake occasional weekend and overtime work as required
• Willingness and ability to carry out field work offshore in small boats and larger research vessels.
