Degree equivalency

Experience
Recent* and Significant**experience in working with First Nations in related resource management, governance, and fisheries issues.
Experience in managing natural resource programs.
Recent* experience in interest based negotiations.

*Recent is viewed as experience in this area in the last 5 years.
**Significant is defined as having the depth and breadth of experience normally obtained over full time performance of the duties over a continuous 3-year period.

Information on language requirements

Knowledge
Knowledge of the objectives and policies of the aboriginal programs of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, particularly as they relate to Pacific Region.
Knowledge of the British Columbia Treaty Commission (BCTC) process and DFO’s role within it.
Knowledge of the Department’s mandate regarding Reconciliation with Indigenous Groups in the Pacific Region.

Education
University degree or post-secondary school diploma in a related field such as aboriginal studies, biology, environmental science, fisheries management, law (aboriginal or environmental).

Degree equivalency

Experience
Experience in policy development.
Experience in managing a program (i.e. manage budgets, capacity building projects, assessing proposals and submitting contracts and developing costing models).
Recent*** experience in managing marine and inland fisheries.

***Recent is viewed as managing a fishery, interacting with stakeholders and First Nations, setting allocations over a period of not less than 5 years.

Knowledge
Knowledge of Federal and Provincial authorities with respect to fisheries in BC.
Knowledge of the First Nation, commercial and recreational fishing sectors and issues in the BC North Coast.
Knowledge of the Nisga’a Final Agreement.

Operational Requirements
Willingness to travel throughout BC.
May be required to drive long distances over rough roads and travel by small fixed wing aircraft, helicopter, boat and ferry. Inclement weather can occur resulting in arrival and/or departure delays.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

Possession of a Class 5 driver’s license or personal mobility to the degree normally associated with the possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
