Duties

About the role:
We are looking for a strategic leader who will report directly to the Alberta Assistant Deputy Minister, and work closely with executives across the WD organization matrix. They will ensure the execution of Western Canada Growth Strategy initiatives in Alberta and contribute to effective performance measurement.

This will require an acute understanding of the economic challenges and opportunities facing Alberta and Western Canada, the ability to effectively engage internal and external partners, and to undertake strategic policy project management.

Intent of the process

We will fill a one year term (temporary) full-time vacancy, with the potentiality of extension. A pool of qualified candidates (fully assessed or partially assessed) will be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level. This process may be used for various positions and tenures (including but not limited to term and indeterminate appointments, internal assignments, secondments, deployments, acting appointments, casual) as well as various locations, security requirements, language requirements and conditions of employment. The pool of qualified candidate may also be shared and accessed with other federal government departments.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in economics, sociology or statistics

* Candidates must always have a degree. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and may have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization. The specialization may also be obtained through an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Significant* experience representing an organization in successful outreach, engagement, and negotiation with external stakeholders
• Significant* Experience collaborating on economic policy-related initiatives with partners or stakeholders
• Significant* Experience providing strategic advice and recommendations to senior management on complex** economic development issues, priorities, or strategies
• Experience in project management processes and project administration

*Significant experience is defined as having the depth and breadth of experience that would normally be acquired with the performance of full time duties for a period of three years or more.

**Complex policy issues are defined as policy issues that are ambiguous poorly defined and require input, expertise and analysis from across multiple sectors, organizations or disciplines.

• Graduate education in a field relevant to the position

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Experience in research and analysis to address a broad range of economic development issues and opportunities in Alberta and/or Canada
• Experience in evaluating or delivering regional/community economic development policies or programs
• Experience in working on Indigenous economic development
• Experience in leading the development of communication plans and strategies
• Depth, breadth and scope of experience in any one or combination of any of the experience requirements
