Duties

The successful candidate will be required to carry out research and development activities related to human machine teaming (HMT) activities at Defence Research and Development Canada. Performing literature reviews on topics relevant to human machine teaming, designing HMT experiments, drafting human research ethics protocols, organizing and conducting research with human participants, performing statistical analyses, writing scientific reports/presentations, and drafting manuscripts for publication.

Work environment

The internship is part of a larger project by Defence Research and Development Canada to design and develop planning tools for the Royal Canadian Navy. The intern will be provided with virtual work opportunities in response to COVID-19 restrictions. The intern will need to be available for work at the Atlantic Research Centre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia should the regional situation allow. The student will be supervised by a defence scientist.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in a human factors related field (psychology, kinesiology, industrial engineering, or cognitive science), AND be currently enrolled as a full time student in a Master’s or PhD program at a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in a human factors related field (psychology, kinesiology, industrial engineering, or cognitive science).

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

The applicant must have experience conducting research with proof of lead authorship on at least one scientific publication, technical report, or thesis relevant to human factors.

Experience designing human factors research experiments

Experience writing human research ethics protocols

Experience conducting research with humans

Experience using data processing software (for example: SAS, R, MatLab, and/or SPSS)

Experience with statistical analyses (for example: ANOVA, regression)

Knowledge of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)
