EDUCATION:
Graduation from a veterinary school accredited or approved by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) OR
Graduation from another veterinary school and holding a Certificate of Qualification (Parts A, B, and C) granted by the National Examining Board of the CVMA

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
Eligibility for membership in a Canadian veterinary association, defined as:
• Current members of a Canadian veterinary association with a license recognized by the CVMA; OR
• Non-members of Canadian veterinary associations holding a Certificate of Qualification (Parts A, B, and C) granted by the National Examining Board (NEB) of the CVMA

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in planning, organizing and managing a laboratory animal medicine program
Experience in performing clinical examinations, diagnostic assessments and treatment of a variety of laboratory animal species, including small animal species
Experience performing pathological examinations and writing pathological reports
Experience in supervising personnel

Post graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in the medical or biological sciences

Diplomate, American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine
Certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine

EXPERIENCE:
Experience designing, planning, carrying out, analyzing and publishing experimental science
Experience in leading a research program
Depth and breadth of project management experience
Experience training personnel
Experience in clinical pathology
Experience with surgical and microsurgical techniques
Experience in cardiovascular physiology
Experience in necropsy and pathological procedures
Experience in infectious disease monitoring, prophylaxis, and treatment procedures
Experience in planning, developing and writing Standard Operating Procedures

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the guidelines and policies of the Canadian Council on Animal Care
Knowledge of biological containment

ABILITIES
Ability to originate, plan, design, execute and report results of experimental or clinical studies or other research involving experimental animals

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be willing and able to work with chemical warfare agents, highly toxic chemicals, radioisotopes or biological agents at various levels of containment, to some of which no effective medical countermeasures are available.

Must be willing and able to work overtime, including weekends and be on call.

Must be willing and able to work with laboratory animals including euthanasia.

Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and radioisotopes.

Must be willing and able to work in a biological containment laboratory.

Must be willing and able to work for extended periods wearing PPE/PAPR, as required.

Must be willing and able to work in a field setting (non-laboratory) including in adverse weather conditions.
Must be willing and able to work for extended periods wearing full CBR equipment, including a DND issued respirator, as required.

Must be willing and able to obtain and retain a DND 404 driver’s licence.

Willingness to travel occasionally, both domestically and internationally.

Conditions of employment

Reliability security clearance
Must be able to obtain and retain a Level II Secret Security Clearance.
Current valid licensure by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association and a member in good standing
Must be willing and able to work with animal models that currently are, or may be in the future, utilized by researchers and other personnel for experimental or training purposes.
Must be able to obtain HPTA clearance.
