The Department of National Defence (DND) is one of the largest federal government employers. DND's role is to provide services and support to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in their operations and missions at home and abroad. As a civilian employee, you will be an essential part of the Defence Team.

Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton (FMFCB) is an operational high hazard industrial marine industry serving the Royal Canadian Navy as a strategic asset. The Ship repair industry is a high paced work environment for which Safety and Environment Inspectors provide ongoing support.

On a daily basis, Safety and Environment Inspectors are required to work through austere work conditions, work at heights, and climb up and down ladders/stairways on board ships in the dry dock and on staging, in order to conduct hazard assessments, to certify confined spaces, and to issue work permits.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates resulting from this process will be created to staff current and future vacancies, and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures (permanent and temporary), various language requirements and profiles, and various security requirements.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Essential Qualifications:

Education:

1. A secondary school diploma (High School) or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

2. Successful completion of an Occupational Safety and Health certificate or diploma (normally acquired over a two year period of study).
OR
Successful completion of Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation
OR
Significant* experience as a Safety Inspector
*Significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of those duties for a period of approximately three (3) years.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

- Significant* experience working in a marine ship repair and maintenance environment
*Significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of those duties for a period of approximately three (3) years.

- Experience issuing work permits
- Experience in conducting investigations
- Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Asset Qualifications:

- Emergency Medical Responder certificate or Occupational First Aid (OFA) III
- Confined Space Technician or Rescue Technician certificate

- Experience in delivering training
- Experience in conducting Respiratory fit test training, fit tests and fall arrest equipment training
- Experience conducting job hazard analysis (JHA) / job safety analysis (JSA)

Operational Requirements:
- Willing and able to climb heights and enter confined spaces onboard naval vessel
- Willing and able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as fall arrest harness and respiratory protective equipment
