Client-Service Results:
Provision of analytical support in bioinformatics by coordinating and conducting bioinformatic analyses, providing advice and recommendations to generate new knowledge, approaches and techniques for Environment and Climate Change Canada’s environmental research.

Intent of the process

The intent of the process is to staff one English essential indeterminate position. A pool of partially or fully assessed candidates will be established and will be used to staff similar positions at the same group and level, with various linguistic requirements, on an indeterminate or temporary basis within Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Education:
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Note:
1. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Significant* experience in analyzing omics data
• Significant * experience in the conductance of research using next generation DNA or RNA sequencing technology.
• Experience in writing scientific reports or publications.
• Experience in planning scientific projects.

* Significant is defined as greater than 3 years’ experience.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of theories and practices of statistical analysis of genomics data
• Knowledge of bioinformatics tools to analyze DNA or RNA sequencing data.
• Knowledge of bioinformatics or genomics programs for statistical analysis.

Ability:
• Ability to analyze and interpret genomics data and produce reports or publications.
• Ability to plan and support genomics research involving next generation DNA or RNA sequencing.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Asset Education:

• A graduate degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) from a recognized a post-secondary institution with specialization in bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics, environmental science or microbiology.

Degree equivalency

Asset Experience:
• Experience in writing scripts in multiple programming languages (for example, R, Python, Java, etc..) for genomics applications
• Experience developing novel genomics data analysis pipelines
• Experience applying high performance computing to genomics problems.
• Experience using omics technologies for environmental toxicology and environmental risk assessment.
• Experience using omics technologies for population genetics and wildlife population monitoring
• Experience performing functional metagenomics using next generation technology.

Operational Requirements:
• Willingness to be away from home for several days at a time on work related travel.

Asset qualifications may be used in the screening process. Therefore candidates must clearly demonstrate in their application which of the asset criteria for education and experience they possess.
