This project involves examining the geothermal energy potential of flooded mines, with particular focus on the Con Mine site near Yellowknife, NWT. The study will involve developing mathematical models of potential heat production and net heat load the mine site can support. The workflow involves examination of bed rock cores to determine physical and thermal properties, as well as historical mine workings to determine total mine volume and geometry. Heat production will be assess through both development of a numerical model as well as by developing an analytical approach based on an energy balance calculation for estimating the geothermal energy contained in a flooded mine.
The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a Master of Science degree at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique with specialization in geothermal modeling.
