By bringing together translators, interpreters and terminologists under one roof, the Translation Bureau is one of the biggest employers of language professionals in Canada.
As a long-standing provider of sign language interpretation services, the Translation Bureau is committed to providing high quality services to federal public employees who are Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing.
The Translation Bureau's conference interpreters provide simultaneous, consecutive sign language interpretation services. Interpretation services include combinations of French-Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) or English-American Sign Language (ASL). Interpretation situations may include, but are not limited to the activities of Parliament, hearings of parliamentary committees of the House of Commons and the Senate, as well as various conferences and events (e. g. meetings and training) organized by government departments and agencies.
The interpreter must establish and maintain close contact with clients, partners, service providers and target audience groups/associations to take proactive steps to maintain and improve, if necessary, the delivery and quality of services provided.
The interpreter is actively involved in the development of projects to achieve the mandate of the Translation Bureau, such as supplier accreditation and performance evaluation processes, access to information initiatives, etc.
The work is performed in an environment that requires a great capacity to adapt and manage the requirements inherent in different environments. The incumbent faces urgent demands, competing and changing priorities, atypical schedules and variable workplaces, broadcast and sometimes high-profile assignments, videoconferencing assignments and tight deadlines.
Interpretation situations may include, but are not limited to, the activities of Parliament, hearings of parliamentary committees of the House of Commons and the Senate, as well as various conferences and events (e.g., meetings and trainings) organized by government departments and agencies.
In addition to his annual leave, a public servant who is assigned to the conference interpretation service and who is normally required to work days of varying length at irregular hours, may receive special compensation in the form of interpretation leave calculated in proportion to the number of days worked by the employee on behalf of the employer during the fiscal year.
From this process, a pool of fully qualified candidates could be established to fill identical or similar positions within the Translation Bureau with various security requirements and durations (indeterminate, term).

Studies
A degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution in addition to a English-ASL interpretation degree from a recognized post-secondary institution
OR
A degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution, in addition to
at least ten (10) years of experience in English-ASL interpretation and 175 hours over the past 5 years of professional development in areas of deafness and interpretation (including the deaf, deaf-blind, deafened and hard of hearing population), politics and public administration.
*Unless otherwise specified (e.g., master's degree), the term "degree" refers to a bachelor's degree, as established by the relevant school authorities.
Professional Certification:
Accreditation of the Translation Bureau as an English-ASL conference interpreter.
Experience:
- At least three (3) years of continuous experience in conference interpretation over the past five (5) years.
- Experience in a project team, including active participation in decision-making and project implementation.
- Recent experience* mentoring or supporting new sign language interpreters.
*Recent experience is defined as an experience gained in the last three (3) years.

Education:
Have completed or are in the process of completing a master’s degree

- Experience in the field of teaching.
- Work experience in a remote interpretation context.
- Experience working in teams with deaf interpreters.
- Experience in a process of accreditation of interpreters in ASL (for example, but not limited to: evaluator, trainer, coordinator, material development)

- Hours of work are sometimes irregular and may include evening work, weekends or holidays.

The selection board may, at any point during the selection process, use random selection or apply asset criteria to select candidates for the next phase of the assessment.
Other abilities, experiences or competencies may apply and may be assessed, depending on the position being staffed.
This process may be used for employment equity appointments.
