Duties

As a Communications Manager, you will be challenged to:

• Manage a communications team, including human resources, responsible for the development and implementation of departmental strategic communications plans and activities.
• Provide strategic advice and guidance on all aspects of communications, frequently involving sensitive subject matter, to the Minister’s office, senior and middle management and employees.
• Passionately and proactively, tell stories through a variety of mediums about the successes, projects and results achieved by CanNor, so that all Canadians have a better understanding of CanNor’s impact.
• Oversee, plan and deliver reactive and proactive media strategies, including the development of media advisories, key messages, questions and answers and the development and organization of special events and media opportunities.

Work environment

Established in August 2009, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is the only federal department with an exclusive mandate for the North. It is headquartered in Iqaluit, Nunavut with regional offices in Yellowknife (Northwest Territories), Whitehorse (Yukon) and a liaison office in Ottawa (Ontario). This position is located at CanNor’s headquarters in Iqaluit and it is supported by staff in all of CanNor's offices.

Education

A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field related to the position such as media studies, public relations, communications, journalism, marketing or other discipline relevant to the position, or a combination of education, training and experience related to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experiences

EX1 - Experience in developing and implementing communications strategies, plans and products.
EX2 - Experience in providing strategic communications advice and recommendations to senior management.*
EX3 - Experience in building collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
EX4 - Significant experience** supervising staff and providing feedback or coaching.
EX5 - Significant experience** in the writing and editing of communications products.

*Senior management is defined as positions equivalent to, or higher than, Director, Director General, Board Chair, Executive Director or Chief Operating Officer.

**Significant experience is defined as a period of at least one year.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance - Medical clearance: The incumbent and their dependents (including spouse or common law partner and children) may be required to obtain Health Canada medical clearance in accordance with the Isolated Posts and Government Housing Directive.
