Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one (1) specified period position in Burlington, ON.

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates will be created and may be used to staff similar positions on an indeterminate, acting, specified period, deployment, secondment or assignment basis, within Fisheries and Oceans – Ontario & Prairies Region.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience leading field or laboratory projects
Experience with the collection and identification of freshwater fishes
Experience with the processing of fish samples in a laboratory
Experience in the use of specialized equipment in a field setting (ex. telemetry equipment, Sondes, current meters, hydroacoustics gear, among other possibilities)
Experience in maintaining fish health and conducting experiments with fish in a laboratory or hatchery
Experience in operating small boats
Experience with basic statistical analyses and presentation of data
Experience with contributing to the production of scientific journal publications or technical reports

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Experience trailering and launching small vessels
Experience in troubleshooting and repairing small engines or powered field sampling equipment (i.e. outboard motors, ATVs, snowmobiles, pumps, or other applicable field gear)
Experience using acoustic telemetry or biologging to track fish
Experience in taxonomic identification of one or more of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthic invertebrates
Experience in the safe use and storage of chemicals in an institutional laboratory
Experience using purchasing processes in a workplace setting
Experience with basic statistical analyses and presentation of data using the program R

Animal care training certificate recognized by Canadian Council on Animal Care

Reliability Status security clearance

Valid Driver’s License (Ontario G class or equivalent)
Valid Health Canada Class III medical certificate, including ECG
Work outdoors under all weather conditions
Conduct field work in remote locations
Participate in surveys aboard research vessels
Work shift work and overtime, often on short notice
Travel within Canada and internationally, for extended periods
Engage in moderately strenuous physical activity and lift/lower moderately heavy equipment (18-25 kg)
