Assessment accommodation

Duties

The Canadian Coast Guard is the lead federal agency for the response component of Canada’s Marine Oil Spill Preparedness Response Regime. The Environmental Response program monitors or manages the clean-up efforts for any ship-source or mystery source pollution incident in waters under Canadian jurisdiction. Under the direction of a CCG Environmental Response Senior Response Officer, this position carries out environmental response duties in the marine environment as part of the Canadian Coast Guard’s federal mandate. Key activities may include response to pollution incidents in the field, operation and maintenance of vessels, pollution response equipment and vehicles, supporting development and implementation of Environmental Response planning, training and exercises as well as carrying out administrative duties as required.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Experience providing operational training, briefings or presentations;

Experience preparing reports and/or technical documents using computer software such as but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook;

Experience working with safety management systems

Experience operating small marine vessels

Experience in maintenance of small equipment including but not limited to gas and diesel pumps, skimmers, outboard engines, hydraulic systems, etc.

ASSET EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
A deck or engine room Marine Certificate of Competency issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations SOR/2007-115 for a Master Limited (60 Ton) or higher and /or a Fourth-Class Engineer, Motor Ship or higher. Certificates will be rated in order of precedence according to the regulations;

Marine mechanic technical certification

Radio Operator’s Certificate (Maritime) or higher

Accredited qualifications as an instructor for first aid and/or exercise development and delivery and/or vessel operations;

Small Vessel Operator’s Certificate (SVOP);

ICS Certification;

Possession of a valid Marine Emergency Duties- A3 or higher Certificate

ASSET EXPERIENCE:
Experience operating pollution countermeasures equipment (oil booms, skimmer, etc).
Experience in emergency response contingency planning
Experience in equipment life cycle management
Experience providing operational training
Experience in small craft operations
Experience using the Incident Command System (does not include training)
Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
Experience operating small equipment, for example: forklifts, hoists, trailers, all-terrain vehicles etc.
Experience with responding to marine pollution incidents.
Experience developing or assisting in operational exercises.
Experience in using mapping software and managing cartographic databases
Experience liaising with external public and/or private partner organizations.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

Medical Clearance: Scientific Personnel- Field
Must qualify and maintain a valid Passport.
Possession of a valid driver’s license
Willing and able to travel on vessels, fixed wing aircraft, and helicopters knowing that such travel may be frequent and occur throughout the year in a variety of weather/sea conditions.
Willing and able to work overtime, on scheduled standby and potentially on weekends as per the applicable collective agreement.
Willing and able to work in a “marine emergency” situation.
Willing and able to work for extended periods on short notice and often in remote locations.
Willing and able to wear the Canadian Coast Guard uniform.
Willing and able to wear CSA approved personal protective equipment related to the job.
