Work environment

The Policy Officer Recruitment Programme (PORP) is a three-year developmental programme designed to recruit and develop talented individuals to meet the unique demands of the defence policy environment and become well-rounded public servants. Training is carried out through in-house learning opportunities, mentoring, and participation in special projects as well as classroom and online courses.

Intent of the process

The intent of the process is to staff (5) positions in the PORP on an indeterminate basis, with a linguistic profile of Bilingual non-imperative BBB/BBB.

A pool of partially qualified candidates may be established and used to staff similar positions with various tenures in the Department of National Defence, with various linguistic profiles and security profiles.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:
ED1: Graduation with a Master's degree in history, political science, international affairs, public administration, law, sociology, economics, or other security and defence-related disciplines from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Candidates currently completing a Master's degree will be considered. They must demonstrate they are able to complete all the requirements of their current studies program to obtain their Master's degree by 30 June 2021.

Candidates must have an acceptable specialization in economics, sociology, or statistics.

Note: Candidates must demonstrate their specialization in economics, sociology or statistics by:
- Indicating that they have taken at least one post-secondary course in one of these subject areas; or,
- Describing a combination of education, training, and/or experience in one of these subject areas.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
EX1: Experience researching, analyzing, and writing on subjects related to security and defence; or international affairs; or public policy.

Asset Experience:
AEX1: Previous work experience on matters related to defence and security, international affairs, or public policy.
AEX2: Previous work experience in the Public Service of Canada, a provincial, territorial, or municipal government entity in Canada, or an international governmental organisation.

Operational requirements:
Ability and willingness to travel, including to deployed Canadian Armed Forces operations.
For some positions, ability and willingness to work overtime frequently and on short notice.

Various security requirements:
Reliability Status.
Secret security clearance.
Top Secret clearance.

Take and subscribe to the oath or solemn affirmation (for individuals appointed from outside the Public Service only).
