The Public Health Agency of Canada is at the front lines of the Government of Canada’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Government of Canada is implementing an evolving health response, which requires a high degree of adaptability from staff. As a result, the days can be demanding. The Agency is looking for people who thrive on challenges, copes well with the unexpected and who have good judgement to complement our public and travel health teams at the ports of entry.

The Designated Screening Officer (DSO) supports the enforcement of the Quarantine Act, in support of Canada's response to COVID-19; its tasks are in particular to:

• Greets travelers at the Canadian border, assess whether their quarantine plan or state of health requires further assessment by a quarantine officer.
• Screening for signs and symptoms of COVID-19
• Communicate basic information on travelers' obligations for their quarantine.
• Facilitate the search for solutions in the development of their quarantine plans for travelers, when necessary; and
• Provide information, advice and support to partners at entry points.
• Assist with the ArriveCan App

By joining the PHAC Public Health and Travel Team, you will help protect the health and safety of Canadians by implementing protocols to prevent and limit the spread of communicable diseases. You will work closely with quarantine officers, seasoned professionals who will pass on important knowledge to you.

Intent of the process

There is an immediate need for Designated Screening Officers at the points of entry in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle (Quebec), Stanstead (Quebec), St-Armand (Quebec), Toronto Pearson International Airport (Ontario), Niagara Falls (Ontario), Fort Erie (Ontario), Windsor (Ontario), Lansdowne (Ontario), Prescott (Ontario), Sarnia (Ontario), Emerson (Manitoba), Coutts (Alberta), Osoyoos (British Columbia), Penticton (British Columbia) and Abbotsford (British Columbia).

The Public Health Agency of Canada will pull and review the applications as received and contact applicants selected for further assessment. Additional locations, other than those listed, may be considered based on the needs of the position being staffed.

This process is intended to create and maintain an inventory of candidates interested in casual work opportunities to fill a number of COVID-related positions across the Public Health Agency of Canada. The PSEA specifies that the number of days worked as a casual worker cannot exceed 90 days in a calendar year within the same department.

Education:
The completion of two years of an acceptable post-secondary program or a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a health field or related to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience in health promotion and compliance of public health measures (such as wearing a mask, physical distancing, etc…)
Experience with border partners (CBSA, police, ambulance, first responders, point of entry/airport authorities, etc.)

- Willingness and ability to successfully complete the Public Health Agency of Canada`s Officer designation program.
- Willing and able to work shifts, variable hours, weekends, and statutory holidays.
