Under the supervision of the Deputy Superintendent Maritime Search and Rescue and/or a Senior Search and Rescue Program Officer, this position carries out emergency Search and Rescue response duties in the marine environment as part of the Canadian Coast Guard’s federal mandate. This includes search and rescue training, liaison, exercising and response activities in the field, maintaining equipment, vessels and vehicles and carrying out administrative duties at the headquarters area.
STREAM 1 : Program Officer, Driving small craft.
As a Program Officer for the operation of small craft training, you would be required to take the Coast Guard basic and advanced training. Subsequently, you would begin the certification process as an instructor. We give an average of twenty courses per year and would be asked to travel to administer the training and become a mentor to the candidates.
STREAM 2 : Program Officer, Emergency First Responder.
As a Program Officer for the Rescue specialist, you would be required to complete the Coast Guard Emergency First Responder training. You would then begin the certification process as an instructor. We give several refresher courses as well as 2 initial courses per year. You would work in a dynamic environment and travel to visit rescue stations to assess the techniques taught at the tactical level.
STREAM 3 : Program Officer, Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) student program.
As a inshore rescue boat program officer, you would be called upon to coordinate the student training program during the summer season. In addition you would be asked to become a mentor to the students of the program so that they can develop their leadership in the maritime environment.
The purpose of this selection process is to create a pool of qualified candidates for Program Officers, Search and Rescue within the Canadian Coast Guard, Central Region, St. Lawrence and Great Lakes Area.
St. Lawrence sector positions are located in Quebec City and Great Lakes sector positions are located in Sarnia.
A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to fill these or similar positions on an indeterminate, specified period (term), acting, assignment or secondment basis.

EDUCATION
ALL STREAMS
ED1: A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
EXPERIENCE
ALL STREAMS
EX1: Recent and significant* experience in tactical emergency search and rescue response operations.
EX2: Recent and significant* experience in establishing relations with public and private partners.
IMPORTANT: Candidates must meet one OR more of the following experience criteria to be considered within this selection process.
STREAM 1 :
EX3:Recent and notable** experience in driving fast small craft (less than 15 Gross Tonnage).
STREAM 2 :
EX4:Recent and significant* experience as Emergency First Responder.
STREAM 3 :
EX5:Recent and significant* experience in executing the student in-shore rescue boat program IRB.
*Recent and significant, is defined as an experience which lasted a minimum of 2 years and acquired within the last 5 years or a minimum of 2 summer seasons as coxswain within the IRB program and acquired within the last 5 years.
**Recent and notable, is defined as a driving experience with a minimum of 15 hours at the command of the small craft in stormy sea conditions ( winds >30 knots and/or visibility< 2 nautical miles) acquired within the last 5 years.

- Maintain a valid Health Canada medical certificate in accordance with the position’s requirements.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license, in accordance with the position’s type.
- Willing and able to travel on various means of transport including ships, small vessels and aircraft to remote locations and abroad, knowing that such travel may be frequent and seasonal.
- Willing and able to work overtime, be on call according to a schedule (day and night, seven days a week) and occasionally work weekends, in accordance with the pertinent collective agreement.
- Willing and able to work in potentially hazardous and /or adverse conditions such as those found in the marine environment and in remote locations.
- Willing and able to work in emergency situations.
- Willing and able to travel for extended periods on short notice.
