Duties

The Foreman position is part of a work unit responsible for maintenance of Coast Guard’s civil and equipment infrastructure, and supervises staff who perform work at the base or at field locations.

The key activities of the position include:
Planning, scheduling and coordinating the installation, maintenance and repair of CCG civil assets, structures and associated infrastructure.

Supervising staff by determining objectives and priorities, assigning work, evaluating employee performance, approving training plans, leave and overtime.

Establishing service levels with clients, tracking information on condition and costs of assets.

Ensuring the safety of employees and members of the public by promoting and implementing safe work practices.

Participating in teams at the regional and area level to provide input to management.

Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) position on a full-time, indeterminate basis in Sorel, QC and one (1) position on a full-time, indeterminate basis in Quebec, QC.

The purpose of this process is to create an inventory of candidates that could be used to staff positions with employment tenures, language requirements, security requirements and work locations (Quebec and Sorel) that may vary depending on the needs of the positions being staffed.

EDUCATION
Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Welding Supervisor Qualification – Canadian Welding Bureau (CSA Standards W47.1 and W47.2)

EXPERIENCE
- Experience in supervising trades staff.
- Experience in life cycle management of assets (such as planning, inspections and maintenance activities).
- Experience providing advice and recommendations to supervisors or managers.
- Recent* and significant** experience as a welder in an industrial shop setting.

*"Recent" means an experience acquired within the last 5 years.
**"Significant" means an experience normally associated with the performance of duties for a period of approximately 3 years.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

EXPERIENCE
- Recent* experience using Maximo, SAP or other AMS (Asset Management System) to report and track life cycle maintenance of assets
- Experience supervising multi-disciplinary groups at least 1 year within the last 5 years

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Valid provincial driver's license and the requirement to drive an automobile or a light truck.
- Valid Health Canada Medical.
- Climb and work in high structures (towers) up to 35 meters high.
- Work overtime as required.
- Travel for extended periods to remote locations and use various modes of transportation including helicopters, ships, planes and small boats.
- Walk over rough terrain in all types of weather conditions (cold weather, wind, rain, snow).
