To be considered for Research Affiliate Program (RAP) work opportunities, you must meet the following criteria:
• Persons residing in Canada and Canadian citizens residing abroad.
• Be recognized as having full-time student status by the post-secondary academic institution at which you are currently enrolled (proof will be required).
• Be enrolled in an academic program that requires research as part of your curriculum.
• Be the minimum age to work in the province or territory where the job is located.
The Northern Forestry Centre, Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada, in collaboration with the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto, is looking for 6 graduate students under the RAP program for a research project on Fire risk and evacuation capabilities in isolated communities. The successful applicants will be part of a study focused on the analytical work to assess wildland fire risk to isolated communities (2 students), fire evacuation trigger analysis (2 students), and social science research on preparedness, wildfire smoke, and evacuation host communities (2 students). The project is aimed at potentially five study sites (communities) across the forested area in Canada; however, researches are not limited only to the selected communities as some researches will be at a national or regional scale.
The selected candidates will develop community-based approaches to integrate traditional knowledge’s in environmental monitoring, advancing methodologies to support fire risk assessment and evacuation trigger assessment at regional scales. The student should pursue opportunities to disseminate research findings through publications in scientific journals or conferences. Planning data acquisitions, pursuing field campaigns, and conduct survey among indigenous communities are all potential activities that can be included.

Education:
Must be a student enrolled in (or who intend to enroll) in a master’s program within the faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environment Sciences and Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta as well as Faculty of Forestry at University of Toronto.
Qualifications: (1) strong background in forestry, biology, geography, or human geography or related social science fields (Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities would be an asset); (2) strong writing communication skills; (3) qualitative (e.g. interviewing, surveys, focus groups) or quantitative (e.g. stats, programming, or GIS) skills; (4) knowledge and/or experience about wildfire or wildfire research; (5) teamwork.
