These Aquatic Science Biologist III positions at DFO are diverse in their duties and required skill sets as they contribute to the full range of DFO's core areas of research. In general terms, an Aquatic Science Biologist III employee is expected to: plan, conduct and lead field or laboratory activities; supervise support staff; present information and work results to stakeholders, develop quantitative models to analyze and interpret data; prepare and present reports in support of requests for advice; contribute to the peer review of reports and scientific publications; publish as lead author and co-authors of technical reports; and contribute to the scientific understanding of Canada's aquatic resources and ecosystems. They are expected to deliver programs to support decisions by the various management sectors that affect Canadians and the aquatic resources of Canada.
We are located in Mont-Joli (Maurice-Lamontagne Institute) and in Moncton (Gulf Fisheries Centre), either on the Estuary or coast of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. These are unique workplaces where you can achieve your professional goals, while working with people who are passionate about their field.
Please note that the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute is a francophone work environment and that the working language is French. Gulf Fisheries Centre is a bilingual work environment and that the working languages are French and English.
A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff permanent or temporary vacancies within the Science Branch. This process may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Presently, we have the need to staff two indeterminate positions and three term positions:
- Biologist in groundfish stock assessment at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute (1 indeterminate position)
- Biologist in fisheries framework science at the Gulf Fisheries Centre (1 indeterminate position, 2 determinate positions)
- Biologist in stock assessment at the Gulf Fisheries Centre (1 term position)

Post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a biological science, or in a field relevant to the position.
At least two years of experience conducting scientific activities in one of the following areas: population science, stock assessment, or risk assessment in the context of resource management.
Significant experience in conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting complex data using statistical analytical techniques or tools associated with ecological studies, stocks, or risk assessments.
Experience in writing scientific papers or technical documents.
Experience working in population science of aquatic resources (e.g., fish, macroinvertebrates, marine mammals), population dynamics or stock assessment.
Experience working in fisheries science, including fisheries-environment interactions.
Experience in data analysis and/or the use of underwater acoustic devices for estimating populations of fish or invertebrates.
Experience working at sea.
Experience in developing statistical models, in particular those related to stock assessment, survey data analysis, or risk assessment.
Experience in the use of large databases.
Experience in statistical programming using statistical software such as R, Matlab, or SAS.
Experience working with the marine or fishing industry, indigenous organizations, or stakeholder groups.
Experience developing and providing science-based advice and recommendations to scientists, managers, or stakeholders.
Experience with DFO’s Canadian Science Advisory processes, policies, and publications.
Experience in supervising science staff or coordinating a science team.
Experience coordinating science projects, science programs or science initiatives.
Experience collaborating on research with partners (including academic, government, industry, and international).
Experience negotiating and managing contracts or funding agreements.
Various language requirements
Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB and CBC/CBC.
