Assessment accommodation

Duties

The student will analyze a large and complex data set on air pollution and related data collected in the Alberta Oil Sands between 2013 and 2020, with the aim of describing the exposure of local populations to pollutants produced by industrial activities, quantifying the contribution by the different facilities to the local pollution mix, and determining temporal trends. Additional fieldwork to collect air pollution data may be required. Full participation in the dissemination of results in the form of presentations both internal (at the university and at Environment Canada) and external (professional meetings, conferences), as well as in the form of scientific manuscripts for publication in the peer-reviewed literature.

Work environment

The work will be conducted mainly at the Environment Canada Downsview facility in an office or analytical laboratories, under the guidance and supervision of a scientific research team. Work may also be performed remotely at home depending on the status of social distancing recommendations in effect in Toronto. Field studies may be conducted at remote field sites in Canada. Job-related travel expenses will be covered by Environment Canada.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

The student must be currently enrolled in a Masters or Doctorate program at a recognized post-secondary academic institution with full-time student status in one of the following specializations: Environmental Science; Chemical or Civil Engineering with Environmental Science specialties.

The candidate will participate in a graduate level research project to investigate emission and atmospheric transport phenomena of air pollutants. Basic knowledge on the emission, environmental transport and behavior of air pollutants in the environment is required. The candidate must also have adequate computing expertise to be able to conduct numerical analysis of air pollution data.

Degree equivalency

Experience in analyzing large amounts of air pollution data using scripts and statistical software such as IGOR

Experience in preparing reports
