Duties

The Arctic Region of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is seeking to recruit enthusiastic individuals to join its team of staff dedicated to the delivery of Federal policy, program and regulatory responsibilities in accordance with the Fisheries Act and Oceans Act, related regulations, and legislated land claim agreements with the goal of ensuring healthy, safe and prosperous fisheries and oceans for the benefit of current and future generations of Canadians.

DFO- Arctic Region staff, particularly in the Marine Planning and Conservation and Fisheries Management programs, are involved with the following types of work in collaboration with other federal departments, provincial and territorial governments, indigenous organizations and communities:

 Lead and facilitate the development and implementation of plans for the integrated management of all activities or measures affecting Canada’s estuaries, coastal waters and marine waters.

 Lead and coordinate the development and implementation of a marine conservation areas network in support of integrated management and sustainable development.

 Developing marine environmental quality guidelines and criteria to mitigate the risk of human caused stressors on the marine environment for project proponents to apply to their activities.

 Establishment of partnerships and management of grants and contributions agreements in support of Indigenous capacity building and cooperation in marine planning and conservation.

 Lead, develop and implement policies, plans and initiatives, in consultation with Indigenous groups, co-management partners, communities, industry and other stakeholders to manage, protect and conserve fisheries resources in the Arctic.

 Develop and implement Integrated Fisheries Management Plans (IFMPs) for key fisheries, through collaboration with co-management organizations, necessary to ensure sustainability and provide for the allocation and distribution of harvestable resources.

 Informed by the scientific evidence and and traditional Indigenous knowledge of fish and marine mammals, work to provide Canadians with a sustainable fishery resource that provides for an economically prosperous and diverse industry.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this process is to create an inventory of candidates that will be used to staff position(s) within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans that are based in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. Priority will be given to staffing positions in Nunavut, or Northwest Territories; however, some positions may be staffed in Winnipeg, Manitoba on an as needed basis. Remote work assignments from other locations may also be considered.

This inventory of candidates may be used to staff similar term and/or permanent positions at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and other Departments and Agencies who have positions in Nunavut. Linguistic profile requirements as well as tenures and/or security clearance may vary according to the position being staffed.
