Assessment accommodation

Please note: An annual terminable allowance of eight thousand ($8,000) will be given to GL-MAM refrigeration HVAC technicians who have refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic certification and perform the duties of a GL-MAM refrigeration HVAC technician.

Work environment

Correctional Service of Canada's Technical Services, Atlantic Region, is a challenging and dynamic environment whose mission is to provide the operation, compliance and sustainability of a real estate portfolio in an operational environment. We are responsible for penitentiary, institutions and complexes as well as parole offices and community correctional centers throughout the Maritimes. The facilities we manage are very diverse, such as buildings and structures, building mechanical systems, electrical distribution systems, infrastructure, generators, oil tanks, thermal power plants, water treatment and purification plants, roads, fences and gates, and vehicle fleets to name a few.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff one indeterminate position. A pool of qualified candidates may be created following this process, and may be used to staff similar equivalent or lower level positions for indeterminate appointments, term appointments, acting appointments, casual, deployments, assignments, and secondments.

A secondary school diploma or a satisfactory score on the PSC test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:

Completion of a Certificate or Diploma program, or apprenticeship accreditation program leading to qualification as a:

• Building Services Technician, or
• Building Systems Technician, or
• Facilities Technician, or
• Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Technician, or
• Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Technician, or
• An acceptable equivalent combination of relevant Building Trade, Technician, Technologist, and/or stationary engineer qualifications.

Experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of Commercial and/or Institutional building systems such as:

• Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems;
• Boilers;
• Compressors; and/or Walk-in coolers and freezers,

Experience in the use of various computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (email).

Experience operating a variety of specialized maintenance tools, and equipment, including test equipment required for the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems and equipment.

EDUCATION:

Successful completion of any work related continuing education courses related to relevant facility maintenance or workplace safety.

Degree equivalency

Qualified under the Boiler and Pressure Vessel regulations of the Province of employment to operate all the employer’s hot water and/or low pressure steam boilers.
Possession of a Provincial Fourth Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency.
Possession of a Provincial or the Inter-provincial Standard (Red Seal) Endorsement for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning or Millwrights or College Graduate in the field of HVAC systems or Mechanical systems.
Qualification to inspect, maintain, repair, and test building fire safety systems as fire alarm and/or sprinkler systems, firefighting equipment, fire separation doors and dampers.
Possession of a provincially designated Trades Licence or Certification, such as: G2 (or higher) Gas Technician License or Facilities Mechanic.
Other certifications such as journeyman accreditation or diploma relevant to facility maintenance.

Experience working with Computer Maintenance Management Systems, Building Automation or Management Control Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).

Experience performing any of the following relevant functions to the duties of the position:

• Simple metal work and metal fabrication, such as basic welding, brazing, soldering, cutting, grinding and bending.

Willingness to work with and/or instruct inmates where applicable
