The research affiliate will help to address information gaps identified in a Peary caribou Knowledge Assessment developed by the Landscape Science and Technology Division of Environment and Climate Change Canada's Science and Technology Branch. The research affiliate will build a habitat quality index focusing on a local population unit within the high arctic distributionof Peary caribou. The habitat quality index will utilize geospatial layers with a focus on vegetation and snow characteristics in the region. The index will be validated by linking the habitat suitability index values to existing and extrapolated estimates of abundance and associated population growth rates.

In addition, Environment and Climate Change Canada's science and technology work helps us to protect and conserve our air, water, wildlife and spaces. The selected student will be conducting work as part of a broader research partnership between the National Wildlife Research Centre and the University of Sherbrooke and will work primarily from the University of Sherbrooke campus under the guidance ofmembers of the scientific research team.

The student must be currently enrolled in a PHD program at a recognized post-secondary institution with an acceptable specialization in geomatics, geography, ecology or some other science relevant to the position.
The student must be capable of integrating multi-disciplinary concepts and information in a highly specialized analytical platform.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting ecological data (e.g. population monitoring).
- Experience manipulating and managing geospatial data.
- Experience processing geospatial data to extract and summarize ecological data using various modelling platforms (e.g ArcGIS).

- Ability to interpret and analyze results of geospatial analyses and summarize them in a report.
