Intent of the process

This process will be used to fill 1 SE-RES position on a determinate basis.

A pool of (fully or partially) qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures, various linguistic requirements, language requirements and profile(s), various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

A covering letter in 5,000 words (maximum) "Candidates must submit a cover letter which clearly demonstrates how they meet each of the screening criteria (i.e. essential education and experience qualifications). In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification.

Productivity/Recognition
• A proven record of scientific publication in relevant peer-reviewed journals, published reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from operational research and scientific analysis.
• Achievement in the form of scientific leadership in the design and resourcing of research projects.
• Demonstration of following through on ecological research projects from large spatial analysis to publication.

Degree equivalency

• Experience conducting and planning research studies using advanced statistical (spatial and time series) and modeling techniques in the ecological sciences, including the integration of multiple models.
• Experience communicating results of research through peer-reviewed publications, reports and presentations.
• Experience using geospatial analytical software linked to the R programming environment, Python, SpaDES, Landis II, Patchworks, etc.

• Experience working directly with forest companies in a research context.
• Experience supervising scientific technical staff, students, and visiting scientists researching forest-ecosystem issues in Canada.
• Experience working directly with NRCan or other federal government department researchers.
• Experience working with indigenous communities.
• Experience with qualitative, quantitative, and geospatial data-analysis techniques.

• Knowledge of boreal-forest ecology in Canada.
• Knowledge of the theories and principles of conservation science and species recovery.
• Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation and regulations concerning species at risk.

• Ability to identify, extract, organize and synthesize relevant information from different information sources.
• Ability to develop research collaborations and partnerships.
