We presently have vacancies for leadership positions within the PHAC’s NESS. Successful candidates will be considered for positions leading a rapidly evolving team that provide support and maintenance for biomedical equipment - a key component of Canada’s public health infrastructure during emergencies such as infectious disease outbreaks and natural disasters. The successful candidate will plan, coordinate, schedule, and supervise key activities of our biomedical technicians and technologists, and will also perform important inspections, tests and maintenance activities on NESS biomedical equipment and devices.
The immediate intent of this process is to staff one (1) indeterminate position with an English Essential language profile. A pool of candidates will be created, and applicants should be aware that this selection process may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level within the NESS.

As a Biomedical Technologist - Team Lead (EL-06) within PHAC’s NESS, your role consists of supervising and managing employees that are responsible for the troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing biomedical equipment and devices within the NESS stockpile. This includes a broad range of equipment – everything from infusion pumps to pulse oximeters. Some of the duties for your level include:
• Providing operational support to the Manager, which includes the upkeep of preventive maintenance schedules and providing maintenance related assistance to ensure that the biomedical equipment inventory remains ready for deployment at all times;
• Planning, coordinating, supervising, and performing the inspection, maintenance (scheduled and unscheduled), and repair of NESS biomedical equipment and devices;
• Planning the required tasks to be performed, either as a large project or as regular daily routines, assigning tasks, and instructing technologists and technicians on proper procedures and techniques;
• Performing a quality assurance role by the ongoing review and supervision of all repair and maintenance work completed, including the review of abnormal or complex issues, and the reporting of findings as well as complete recommended actions required;
• Ensuring the facility remains in a safe, functional state by continually observing and addressing any deficiencies or issues that may arise, through normal operations or exceptional circumstances;
• Coordinating and performing the administrative aspects of the work, including inventory control, procurement, and upkeep of the preventative maintenance software, including keeping accurate maintenance history records;
• Providing technical advice and guidance on the maintenance, repair, testing, and inspection of equipment to the team members;
• Ensuring availability, accessibility and serviceability of tools, equipment, technical publications, and parts;
• Ensuring that work is conducted in a safe manner according to Workplace Health and Safety legislation.

This office is also responsible for developing and delivering training courses that teach health workers how to respond to emergency situations. We support Canada’s National Emergency Strategic Stockpile (NESS). The NESS contains supplies that provinces and territories can request in emergencies, such as infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters and other public health events, when their own resources are not enough. These supplies include a variety of items such as:

EDUCATION

• Membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT or other equivalent provincial technology associations;
• Certification as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist through the AAMI Credentials Institute (ACI); or
• Membership in provincial or national clinical/biomedical engineering society (e.g., Clinical Engineering Society of Ontario (CESO), Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES)).

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL POSITIONS
• Work activities are primarily performed in the workshop using sit and stand workstations with the occasional visit to the field;
• You may be exposure to disagreeable conditions, such as inclement weather, working in confined spaces and potential contact to hazardous voltages;
• You will be required to stand, bend, stoop and work in cramped and awkward positions where flexibility of movement is limited;
• You will be required to lift, carry and position up to twenty-seven (27) kilograms for short periods;
• This work requires frequent repetitive movements of arms and hands when using tools.
