What will you be doing:
• Serve as a Medical Officer of Health for First Nations communities in Alberta, both transferred and non-transferred in accordance with the provisions of the Alberta Public Health Act.
• Provide Public Health Preventive Medicine (PHPM) leadership, expert advice and direction to regional management and staff with regard to public health programs and practice, particularly in the areas of communicable disease control, tuberculosis elimination, sexually transmitted infections and environmental health, emergency preparedness and response, health assessment and surveillance, community development and health promotion disease prevention strategies.
• Link First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) with Alberta public health authorities to assure seamless access and equitable services to First Nations communities as per areas described above.
• Lead public health teams in investigations of disease clusters or outbreaks, taking appropriate public health measures to mitigate and control such occurrences.
• Collaborate with First Nations and academic institutions in community initiated or participatory research and facilitate community engagement and participation serving community identified needs.
• Advocate with regard to health determinants and participate and facilitate endeavours and coalition building to address significant First Nations population health needs.
• Advise First Nations leaders and regional management in strategic program planning, objective setting, managing, and delivering community health services.
• Communicate with public, media and various venues including local, national and international conferences on Indigenous Public Health issues and challenges impacting First Nations communities.
• Chair and or participate in various regional, provincial and federal public health committees.
• Manage an interdisciplinary team of professionals advising regional and community staff.
• Act as preceptor and contribute to the educational preparedness of public health residents, medical students and other allied professions students.
• Report to the regional executive officer.

Essential Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized school of medicine.
Occupational Certification:
-Licensed (or eligible for licensure) with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
-Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) certification in Public Health and Preventive Medicine
Essential Experience:
1. Recent and significant* experience in public health practice.
2. Recent and significant* experience working within multidisciplinary teams in a public healthcare practice.
3. Experience providing strategic advice or recommendations to senior managers and/or stakeholders**.
*Recent and significant is defined as having the depth and breadth of experience that would normally be acquired over a period of approximately two (2) years fulltime within the last five (5) years. Experience can be gained through full-time and part-time employment, volunteer or charity work, social work, or similar venues.
**Examples of stakeholders include provincial health authorities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or band chief and council.

Asset Education:
Masters of Public Health from a recognized school of medicine.
Asset Experience:
Experience working with Indigenous people or organizations.
Experience in managing a health program and/or services of a significant size and complexity.
Asset Knowledge:
1. Knowledge of the theory and practice of public health and population health.
2. Knowledge of the mission and mandate of First Nations and Inuit Health Branch in Indigenous Service Canada (ISC).
3. Knowledge of First Nations culture, history and political organization in Alberta.
4. Knowledge of the relevant federal and provincial acts, notably the Public Health Act.
ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Willingness and ability to work overtime or extended hours.
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively to Indigenous communities, including flying in small aircraft to remote locations and/or lengthy vehicle travel.
• Some occasional national travel may also be required.
• Note: On occasion, travel may require being away from home for more than a few days a week.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
Secret security clearance
-Possess a Certification in a medical specialty recognized by a statutory licensing body of Canada.
(In order to be appointed, candidates must be registered in the province or territory where the position is being staffed.)
