Duties

Work duties may include: Operation, installation, maintenance, repair of all Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning, Refrigeration systems, components and equipment providing optimum physical environmental conditions for the occupants, management and staff of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) facilities.

Work environment

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is the federal government agency responsible for administering sentences of a term of two years or more, as imposed by the courts. CSC is responsible for managing institutions of various security levels and supervising offenders under conditional release in the community.

Intent of the process

A qualified pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff the same or similar vacant positions now or in the future. This pool will have a validity period and may be extended pending management approval.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

A secondary school diploma or a satisfactory score on the PSC test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
Possession of a valid Ontario College of Trades License or Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) Certification as:

• Class Operating Engineer 4Th Class – Standardized (or higher), or
• 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic, or
• 313D Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic, or
• 255W Facilities Mechanic, or
• 255B Facilities Technician, or
• G2 (or higher) Gas Technician License

EXPERIENCE:
Acceptable Experience* in the operation, maintenance, and repair of Commercial and/or Institutional building systems such as:

• Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems;
• Boilers;
• Compressors; and/or Walk-in coolers and freezers,

*Acceptable experience is defined as a minimum of 3 years

Experience operating a variety of specialized maintenance tools and equipment, including test
equipment required for the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems and equipment.

Experience with the use of various computer software programs such as: Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Knowledge of workplace health and safety.

Knowledge of the applicable codes and regulations relevant to the maintenance and operations of building mechanical systems.

Knowledge of the principles and practices required for maintenance of acceptable indoor air quality and optimization of building energy efficiency.

Knowledge of best practices for the preventive and corrective maintenance of building systems, machinery and equipment.

ABILITIES/SKILLS:

Ability to troubleshoot system failures and malfunctions to initiate or propose solutions.
Ability to work under pressure.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

Meeting any and all asset qualifications is not essential however, candidates that can demonstrate they meet these qualifications may have an advantage in this staffing process as the hiring manager has the discretion to assess some, none or all of the asset qualifications.

EDUCATION:

Successful completion of any work related continuing education courses related to relevant facility maintenance or workplace safety.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:

Possession of a valid Ontario College of Trades License or Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) Certification as:

• Class Operating Engineer 3rd Class or higher – Standardized
• G2 (or higher) Gas Technician License
• 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic
• 255W Facilities Mechanic
• 255B Facilities Technician

Other certifications such as journeyman accreditation or diploma relevant to facility maintenance.

Qualification to inspect, maintain, repair, and test building fire safety systems as fire alarm and/or sprinkler systems, firefighting equipment, fire separation doors and dampers.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience working with:

• Computer Maintenance Management Systems
• Building Automation or Management Control Systems
• Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
• Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Experience performing any of the following relevant functions to the duties of the position:

• Simple metal work and metal fabrication, such as basic welding, brazing, soldering, cutting, grinding and bending.

Experience working in a correctional, industrial or institutional environment.

5 years or more, experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of Commercial and/or Institutional building systems such as:

• Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems
• Boilers
• Compressors; and/or Walk-in coolers and freezers
