Duties

Responsibility and challenges of the position:

CanmetMINING, Natural Resources Canada has received funding for a research project to support sustainable resource development by advancing risk assessment and mitigation measures as they relate to the Canadian mining sector’s ability to adapt to a changing climate.

Mineral processing operations are the largest water users in any mining operation, using up to 80% of the site’s total water consumption. The water intensity of mineral processing operations makes it one of the most susceptible part of mining to climate change impacts such as changes in water availability with direct impact on the operation’s bottom line. This project will focus on the development of better understanding and strategies for improving water management in mineral processing circuits.

The emphasis of the project will be on evaluating process and technology options to reduce the use of fresh water in mineral processing circuits and to reduce fresh water use while addressing the negative effects of water recycling on the process performance.

The student will be the primary contributor to the research work outputs, which may include technical reports, scientific journal articles and conference presentations. The position also includes planning, identifying resource needs for the development and completion of the research activities. Note that any Intellectual Property created from carrying out this research will rest with Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada as represented by the Minister of Natural Resources.
