Duties

The Industry Services Division of the Canadian Grain Commission in the Eastern region is working at various grain terminal elevators in order to provide inspection services during vessel loadings from Thunder Bay, Ontario to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Equipment Technician will be working in collaboration with the sampling unit team to evaluate and maintain sampling systems at various locations. Although required training will be provided, the successful candidate must be capable of demonstrating initiative and analytical thinking to inspect and evaluate systems and troubleshoot when issues are encountered.

The technician will also be responsible to perform a variety of verifications, calibrations, maintenance or trouble shoot different type of equipment and instrumentations used by the inspection programs such as but not limited to carter dockage testers and other laboratory equipment. The work is performed at various sites including grain elevators along the St-Lawrence, in Soutern and Northern Ontario, Halifax NS and Churchill MB, which are all industrial environments and the regional laboratory in Montreal.

The candidate will be responsible to maintain records, keep logs and make recommendations based on verifications to the grain specialists and inspection manager. The candidate will need to work independently based on prescribed and often tight deadlines dictated by service requirements. As such, close communication with industry personnel when working on sampling systems verifications will be required. The work involves application of legislation, policy and procedures as it pertains to the position.

The position will be a combination of manual work with fixing equipment and verification of sampling system as well as office work to organize the verifications of various equipment, record keeping and report writing. The position is based in the Montreal Regional lab but regular and frequent travel is required to various satellite locations . The candidate will need to work collaboratively with staff at various location across the region with support from the inspection team.

Asset Education:
Successful completion of a degree, applied degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution (e.g. college, CEGEP, university) relevant to the duties of the position (e.g. sciences, electrical, electronics, mechanical, instrumentation technology or other related fields); and/or an acceptable combination of vocational studies (such as professional school diploma or technical school certificate in a trade related to mechanics, electrical, electronics, instrumentation technology or other related field) and a minimum of 1 year of work experience.

Asset Experience:
• Recent* experience in verification, calibration or maintenance of mechanical systems such as agriculture equipment, elevator sampling systems, or any other mechanical systems.
• Recent* experience in the operation and maintenance of basic mechanical equipment.
• Recent* experience in trouble shooting for basic mechanical equipment or laboratory equipment.
• Recent* experience in writing reports and recommendations for equipment or systems to ensure they meet satisfactory functional requirements.
• Recent* experience in a laboratory environment utilizing or maintaining equipment or instrumentation.
• Recent* experience working in the grains, feedstuffs or food industry.
• Recent* experience in operating within a quality management system.
• Recent* experience in carrying out inspection and/or evaluation of mechanical systems.

Asset Knowledge:
Knowledge of sampling systems or similar mechanical systems used in the food industry or other related fields.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain, in good standing, the appropriate security level clearance for access to any port or work related site.
• Valid driver's license OR personal mobility in the time and manner normally associated with possession and use of a valid driver's license.
• Ability and willingness to lift grain samples (up to 20 kg), to climb ladders and work at heights.
• Ability and willingness to be exposed to grain dust / soil, and to outdoor conditions in an industrial environment. Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication, and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
• Ability and willingness to work overtime, FREQUENTLY as required.
• Ability and willingness to travel, FREQUENTLY as required, including on short notice.
• Ability and willingness to work in and around moving equipment in an indoor/outdoor industrial environment.
• Ability and willingness to adhere to CGC and industry health and safety standards and procedures.
