Duties

This project involves examining microfossils preserved in environmental media, mainly collected from the Northwest Territories, Canada. The study will focus on peat monoliths and surface moss samples from the Mackenzie River Basin and surrounding areas. The workflow involves field work, laboratory processing, advanced microscopic techniques, and statistical analyses of results.

Intent of the process

The intention is to staff one student position for the completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Earth Sciences with specialization in micropaleontology at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

• Currently enrolled or willing and able to enroll as a full-time student at the Carleton University in a Doctor of Philosophy program in Earth Sciences with specialization in micropaleontology or other specialization relevant to the duties of the position.
• Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Geoscience or other field relevant to the duties of the position .
• Master of Science degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Geoscience or other field relevant to the duties of the position.
• Successful completion of thesis(es) in micropaleontology (e.g., palynology, foraminifera, testate amoebae, or other microfossil groups) and/or evidence of publication(s) in micropaleontology (minimum submission of manuscript(s) to one or more peer reviewed journals).

Degree equivalency

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.
• Experience in a laboratory setting.
• Experience in a field setting.
• Experience writing manuscripts (that have been submitted) to peer-reviewed journals on the topic of micropaleontology.
• Experience using advanced light microscopy (high-powered transmitted light microscopy).
