The Aquatic Ecosystems sector works to protect, enhance and restore the biodiversity and health of Canada’s marine and freshwater environments through an integrated ecosystem approach that supports the sustainable use of aquatic resources. There is a growing understanding among Canadians of the importance of protecting and benefiting from our marine and freshwater environments and resources. The Government of Canada is using a modern and coordinated approach to manage the impact of human activities on Canada’s oceans in a sustainable manner, creating a balance between protecting marine ecosystems and maintaining a prosperous economy.
Aquatic Ecosystems in Maritimes Region is comprised of the following Directorates and Programs:
• Ecosystem Management – which includes the Species at Risk Program, the Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program and the Aquatic Invasive Species Program
• Oceans and Aquaculture Management - which includes the Marine Planning and Conservation Program and Aquaculture Management Program.
Among other things, employees in BI-02 and PC-02 positions are asked to conduct analyses, participate and consult with various partners and stakeholders, undertake field work, draft documents and make recommendations to supervisors regarding the implementation of various regulatory, management, and conservation programs.

The intent of this inventory is to create a pool of partially qualified candidates for opportunities in Dartmouth, NS. EDUCATION:
→ For BI-02 positions: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
→ For PC-02 positions: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

EXPERIENCE ( for both BI-02 and PC-02 positions):
►Experience reviewing or evaluating or managing impacts of human activities on aquatic species or their environments.
►Experience working collaboratively with government or non-government partners, clients or stakeholders on natural resources or environmental management issues
►Experience communicating scientific, technical, or regulatory information to non-experts.
**Please note that the completion of an academic course in itself does not constitute experience. The Assessment Board is looking for demonstrated tactical experience gained in a work or volunteer setting.
These asset qualifications are specific to the work in one or more of our Directorates/Programs. Candidates are asked to answer the screening questions for which they have experience. **Note: While these qualifications are not under the heading of essential qualifications, depending on the position being staffed, any of the following “Asset” or “other” qualification may be deemed as essential qualifications and only those candidates and persons with a priority or preference entitlement who possess those qualifications will be considered for that specific vacancy.**
ASSET EDUCATION:
→ Graduation with a Masters or Doctoral degree from a recognized university in a program or specialization in aquatic environments.
→ Diploma or degree in environmental/water resource engineering or geomatics.
ASSET EXPERIENCE:
► Experience in the assessing, listing, conservation, protection or recovery of species at risk.
► Experience participating in committees, working groups, or consultations with various partners, including Indigenous groups and/or stakeholders.
► Experience implementing federal or provincial Acts or regulations regarding the conservation of aquatic species.
► Experience in oceans and coastal planning or marine protected area and conservation planning.
► Experience using Geographic Information System (GIS) software (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS 10.x) for the management and analysis of spatial and non-spatial data sets.
► Experience managing, regulating, or studying aquatic invasive species in Atlantic Canada.
► Experience managing, regulating or assessing marine aquaculture activities .
► Experience writing or editing technical documents or reports.
► Experience providing science-based advice on issues related to the conservation or management of aquatic species or ecosystems.
►Experience in undertaking field work in support of evaluating impacts of human activities on aquatic species or their environments.
Various language requirements
Official language proficiency will not be assessed for entry in to the partially qualified pool. Candidates entered in the pool will have an opportunity for assessment of their official language proficiency if and when they are considered for an bilingual position or appointment. Please note that most of our positions only require capacity in the English language, however there may be a requirement for bilingual proficiency in the future.
