Duties

The Writer/Editor translates, revises and/or edits decisions and orders and other public and internal documents of the Agency in both official languages in support of the Agency intended for the transportation industry and the general public as well as employees and managers of the Agency; translates, revises, edits and standardizes public and internal documents such as reports, announcements, decisions, orders, brochures, press releases, responses to questions from the House of Commons, memoranda, etc., in both official languages, intended for the transportation industry and the general public as well as employees and managers of the Agency.

Intent of the process

This process is to staff one indeterminate position and one determinate position. A pool of qualified or partially-qualified candidates could be created to staff future positions with various tenures (indeterminate, deployment, acting, and assignment/secondment) with similar requirements, various language requirements and profiles and various security requirements.

Results of this staffing process may be used for similar positions in the Agency and other departments and agencies in the federal government.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree in translation from a recognized university or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCES:
Experience* translating a variety of English documents into French and conducting comparative reviews of translated texts .

Experience* revising and editing documents in both official languages.

Experience* using computer-assisted translation systems, including translation memories, such as MultiTrans.

* Experience is normally achieved through the performance of relevant duties on a regular and continuous basis for a period of approximatively one (1) year (within the past five (5) years.)

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the French and the English languages: vocabulary, grammar, spelling and composition.

ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively verbally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to work effectively in a stressful environment with changing and conflicting priorities.

Ability to assess the workload, set priorities and meet deadlines.

Ability to produce high-quality translations from English to French.

Ability to research, analyze and correct text formatting and syntax in order to resolve translation problems.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:
Experience** translating a variety of English documents into French and conducting comparative reviews of translated texts.

Experience** revising and editing documents in both official languages.

Experience as a translator, working in a translation unit.

Experience in a quasi-judicial or legal environment (e.g.: tribunal, court, commission, board, law or notaries firm or professional association).

Experience in a transportation-related environment.

Experience in conducting quality control activities.

Experience coordinating translation requests and coordinating with external translation service providers.

** Experience is normally achieved through the performance of relevant duties on a regular and continuous basis for a period of approximatively two (2) years (within the past five (5) years.).

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Willingness and ability to work overtime to meet expectations and tight deadlines.

The Asset Qualifications contained in the Statement of Merit Criteria may be used as a screening tool. Candidates must meet all of the essential qualifications to be appointed to a position. A candidate may be appointed to a position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications or operational requirements. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

Pass marks will be established for each qualifications. However, achieving the pass mark is not a guarantee of an appointment or that candidates will be put through the next stages of the assessment process. Cut-off scores and/or top-down approach may be used at any stage of the staffing process if there are a sufficient number of candidates to meet anticipated staffing needs.

Locations, dates and times for exams and/or interviews will be determined by the employer. Scheduling of alternative exam and interview dates will only be considered for religious reasons, death in the family, in cases of serious illness or for a reasonable reason approved by the selection committee. A doctor's certificate or other proof will be required.

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans and to Canadian citizens, in that order, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
