Duties

As part of AAFC’s Information Systems Branch, you will be a part of an organization that prioritizes innovation and both departmental and inter-departmental collaboration. The organization is supported by a Chief Information Officer who has implemented a personalized approach to Employee Wellness and Talent Management programs for all employees.

As a Database Analyst, you would provide database administration functions including:
✔ supporting database applications (custom and commercial off the shelf) using Oracle or other major relational database systems
✔ working with various software applications in order to provide technical support and assistance to clients
✔ maintaining service availability and monitor database performance
✔ participating in multi-disciplinary IT project teams focusing on database development and administration

Intent of the process

Immediate need: To staff 1 Database Analyst position on a full-time permanent basis (in either Ottawa or Winnipeg).

Qualified candidates will also be placed in a talent pool to be used for staffing similar permanent or temporary positions.

In addition to permanent staffing, we may also use this selection process when needing to hire experienced public servants who are interested in temporary opportunities such as acting appointments, assignments, or secondments.

Successful completion of two (2) years of an acceptable post-secondary educational program in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed.

Degree equivalency

► Significant and recent experience working in an Information Management and Information Technology (IM/IT) environment analyzing requirements, delivering solutions and/or providing support. Significant experience is defined in that it is a major aspect of your daily work activities. Recent experience is defined as being within the last two (2) years.
► Experience in identifying and assessing IM/IT requirements, and providing IM/IT technical advice, assistance, and coaching to colleagues or clients.
► Experience in preparing technical documentation, such as procedures, user guides and IM/IT requirements.
► Considerable and recent experience in database management with Oracle 11gR2 or greater on HP-UX or Linux platform. Considerable experience is defined as an important aspect of your daily business activities. Recent experience refers to experience gained in the last two years.

► Recent experience in analyzing, designing, programming and maintaining computer applications using programming languages, technologies and/or architectures such as:

o PL/SQL programming
o n-tier application architecture
o Incident management using tools such as Vantive, Assyst or Automatic Call Distributions (ACD)
o Erwin (Data modeling)
o Identifying and resolving operational, performance and connectivity problems for Corporate Applications
o Database administration with emphasis in the implementation, installation and maintenance of Oracle RDBMS database software and associated tools.
o Public or private cloud (Azure, AWS, etc.)
o Kubernetes, Docker, and/or other similar technologies
o Other popular relational and non-relational data storage technologies such as Hadoop/Cloudera, MySQL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL, etc.

► Recent experience in an operations infrastructure support role such as:
o Operating system support of Oracle databases

► Knowledge of data modeling and/or database development and management concepts and techniques.
► Knowledge of IT Operations service delivery and service support concepts including approaches for their implementation.
► Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Linux or UNIX operating systems.
► Knowledge of data integration practices for Extract/Transform/Load (ETL), Enterprise Information (EII) and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI).

WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT? ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

⇨ You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Depending on the number of applicants, volume management strategies such as random selection, top-down approach and/or establishing cut-off scores to determine who will continue in the staffing process, may be used for the purpose of managing applications. Please note that although you may attain the established pass mark on any of the assessments used in this staffing process, management may decide to use a higher cut off score.

⇨ A written examination and/or an interview will be administered.

⇨ Reference checks will be conducted and you will be asked to provide contact information for references, including at least one current or former supervisor and a client. Reference checks will be sought near the end of the selection process. The Assessment Committee reserves the right to contact references other than the ones submitted by the candidates if found necessary, in order to make a suitable assessment of the candidates.
