Work environment

This challenging and rewarding position is at the heart of the Government of Canada as part of the team working on the editing and translation of its prime decision-making document: Main Estimates, and Supplementary Estimates. This position requires superior professional language skills. You will play a role in determining the correct usage and terminology describing the most visible public and government programs. The Editor is part of a team of language specialists in a dynamic work environment delivering more than 7 million words each year.

We are also offering our employees flexible work arrangement such as a compressed schedule and telework.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified persons resulting from this process will be created and may be used to fill similar positions with linguistic profiles (bilingual imperative CCC/PPC or bilingual imperative PCC/PPC) as well as tenures (indeterminate, deployment, acting, assignment, secondment, specified period) which may vary according to the position being staffed.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:
Bachelor’s degree, from a recognized post-secondary institution, with specialization in translation, French studies, linguistics or other field of specialization related to the position, or *acceptable combination of education, training or experience

*At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training or experience may be used as an alternative to the minimum educational standard.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
- *Significant experience in editing or writing, in French, various complex, strategic or high profile texts for different audiences;
- *Significant experience in comparing various high visibility texts translated from English into French;
- *Significant experience in translating documents from English into French;
- Experience in providing language advice.

Defintion:
*”Significant experience” is defined as experience, acquired in the workplace, of a breadth and depth normally associated with the performance of duties for a period of at least four (4) years.

Bilingual - Imperative (CCC/PPC)

Information on language requirements

Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the terminology tools and resources used by editors and translators;
- Thorough knowledge of French grammar and language conventions.

Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally;
- Ability to thoroughly edit communication products written in French by public policy specialists or experts from the federal administration to ensure accuracy and readability;
- Ability to thoroughly edit texts translated from English into French, including reports and documents of an administrative, financial and budgetary nature, to ensure accuracy, readability and compliance with stylistic and terminological conventions;
- Ability to translate short texts related to the activities of the federal administration from English into French on an ad hoc basis;
-Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines;
- Ability to provide advice on the rules governing translation and editing, and on plain language principles.

ASSET CRITERIA

Experience:
- Experience in translation or editing in the federal administration.

Knowledge:
- Good general knowledge of a range of fields, including the functioning of public authorities, acquired through extensive professional experience in editing or translation;
- Knowledge of the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s mission, vision and priorities.
