During this process, you will be asked to answer screening questions. To help you, here is an example of a question and expected answer :
SAMPLE QUESTION
Do you have recent* and significant** experience managing several aspects of a complex commercial kitchen environment***, including but not limited to scheduling and training staff, planning menus, estimating food requirements, as well as maintaining health and safety standards?
* Recent experience is defined as the experience acquired within the last five (5) years.
** Significant is defined as depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of those duties on a regular basis for a period of two (2) or more years at a level equivalent or superior to sous chef.
*** Complex commercial kitchen environment is defined as having two or more of the following characteristics: several specialty stations, in-house dining and banquet services, over 30 covers, or wide variety of menu items.
SAMPLE ANSWER
From June 2016 to March 2019, as sous-chef for the ABC Inn, I was responsible for managing all aspects of the kitchen, under the supervision of the Head Chef. The kitchen environment in which I worked was complex because we provided both in-house dining to the Inn's guests with a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu, as well as banquet services for the numerous functions held at the Inn, including wedding receptions and conferences. It was also complex because of the range of menu options, which included local specialty foods which changed based on seasonal availability. This required several stations where assistant chefs were trained in preparing specialty items, for example, wild game or fish indigenous to the area. As sous chef, I was responsible for ensuring quality standards were met, which meant training all assistant chefs, including cross-training them to ensure adequate coverage during peak periods or periods of absences, evaluating their performance, and providing additional training where required. I was also responsible for scheduling all of the kitchen staff, from the dishwashers to all cooking staff. I planned all seasonal menus, as well as worked with clients to develop banquet menus. This included taking into account food allergies and special requests. I was responsible for calculating food requirements, placing orders, and ensuring adequate stock of staple ingredients. To that end, I established good relationships with local suppliers to ensure a steady supply of quality foods. I was also responsible for ensuring that the Inn's safety and hygiene policies were followed at all times in the kitchen, by overseeing food handling procedures, following health inspector's kitchen hygiene standards and protocols, and ensuring the staff received appropriate training in these areas.
You must clearly demonstrate in the screening questions how you meet the education and experience factors listed in the Essential Qualifications section below. It is your responsibility to provide concrete examples (including dates), that illustrate how you meet each Essential Qualification. Failing to do so could result in your application being rejected as candidates will NOT be solicited for incomplete or missing information. Please note that stating that the requirement has been met, and/or listing past or current responsibilities, does not represent adequate substantiation. Rather, you must provide concrete examples that clearly illustrate how you meet the requirement. Résumés may be used as a secondary source to validate the qualifications described; comments such as "refer to my attached résumé" will not be accepted and may result in your application being rejected.
Preference will be given to veterans and to Canadian citizens, in that order, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
