Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff one position at the Canadian Coast Guard College. A pool of qualified candidates will be created and may be used to staff similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis at the Canadian Coast Guard College in Sydney, NS.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION
• Successful completion of a Secondary School diploma or an acceptable combination of training, education, or experience relevant to the discipline.
• Successful completion of a marine navigation training program in a recognized marine training school; OR an acceptable combination of training, education, and experience in marine navigation as either (1) a Master Near Coastal; (2) a Master 500 Gross Tonnage Near Coastal; (3) a Chief Mate Near Coastal plus one year experience in industry; OR (4) a Watchkeeping Mate Near Coastal plus three year experience in industry.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
• Certification as a Watchkeeping Mate Near Coastal with STCW Endorsement; OR Chief Mate Near Coastal; OR Master 500 Gross Tonnage Near Coastal; OR Master Near Coastal; OR other navigation certification such as Small Vessel Operator (SVOP) certification combined with Rigid Hull Inflatable Operator Training (RHIOT) certification.

EXPERIENCE
Applicants must clearly demonstrate in their application that they have a significant* and recent** experience in at least one of the following:
• Experience in delivery and support of Search and Rescue operations aboard a ship;
• Experience as a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Coordinator, or Operations Center Coordinator;
• Experience in providing advice and recommendations to management on operational issues and training in Search and Rescue (SAR) such as being in command in small fleet, carrying out drills and delivering training, being involved with SAR cases, being On Scene Coordinator in a large exercise or SAR case, etc;
• Experience in providing knowledge-based and operational training sessions associated with Search and Rescue (SAR) such as providing First Aid training, Rescue Specialist training, Mass Rescue Operations training, or Inshore Rescue Boat Training.

Significant* – Significant experience is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex related activities for at least two (2) years.
Recent** – Recent experience is normally associated with experience obtained within the past five (5) years.

ASSETS - EDUCATION
A Successful completion of a Post-Secondary School diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization that is relevant to the position such as a diploma in nautical sciences; a bachelor degree in emergency management; a bachelor degree in public safety; OR a bachelor degree in nautical sciences (navigation).

Degree equivalency

ASSETS - EXPERIENCE
• Past or current experience working as a training instructor within the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) OR supporting Search and Rescue (SAR) agency.
• Experience in Search and Rescue operations within the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) OR with another private or public organization.

• Willingness to operate and supervise small craft operations as per the CCGC standards
• The candidates must agree to carry out overtime and to travel within the framework of their employment upon request even on a short notice
• Willingness to continue developing and updating knowledge and skills by following training as requested by Canadian Coast Guard College (CCGC) management
• Willingness to work flexible hours
