Managers at the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) in Ottawa’s office manage different work units. These work units are responsible for, among other things, the delivery of the various hydrographic products to customers, the support provided to the data production teams, the remote sensing expertise center, the management of intellectual property data and memorandum of understanding, of maritime spatial data infrastructure and scientific data management.
These services in support of CHS program objectives and initiatives, including the implementation of a new business model based on geospatial digital data, are offered on behalf of CHS managers and staff to external clients such as the commercial shipping industry, recreational boating, fishing industry, other government departments and academia that use these products and services to ensure safe navigation and to carry out technical and scientific studies. These products and services protect life, property and the marine environment and are essential to the safety of shipping in Canadian waters. In addition, the geospatial digital data is part of the cornerstone of the blue economy.
The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) is part of the Science sector of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
CHS vision is to be a world leader and leader in hydrography, a proactive and reliable supplier of geospatial hydrographic services, and a strong partner in the development and application of ocean technology. The CHS office in Ottawa has more than fifty employees and works in close collaboration with the 5 other CHS offices: St. John’s (NL), Dartmouth (NS), Mont-Joli (QC), Burlington (ON) and Sidney (BC) as well as with various government departments.
The immediate intent is to staff one position on an indeterminate basis, bilingual imperative CBC/CBC.
However, a list of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to fill similar positions with various language requirements, tenures and security requirements within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

►EDUCATION:
ED1 – Graduation with a degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution**, with acceptable specialization in Marine Sciences, Hydrography, Oceanography, Geomatics, Physical Geography or some other sciences related to duties of the position.
*The term “degree” refers to a baccalaureate as established by educational authorities.
**Recognized post-secondary institution is defined as a public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs.
►EXPERIENCE:
E1 – Experience in the planning, implementation or support of a geospatial service or a scientific program within an operational or scientific organization.
E2 – Experience in providing advices to senior managers.
E3 – Experience in effective participation in committees, national working groups or collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
E4 – Experience in human and financial resources management.

EA4 – Experience in effective participation in committees, international working groups or international collaborative relationships with interested parties.

ASSESSMENT

If you are successful, you may be invited to meet the assessment board for an interview. This interview may be conducted virtually. Other types of assessment could also be used later in the process.
